  • Alene Murrell, author and 1937 Stanton graduate, will speak in the auditorium at Stanton College Preparatory School on March 26, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. She will speak about her experiences at Stanton, growing up in Jacksonville, living for three years with Zora Neale Hurston, and living through the depression and World War II. Ms. Murrell has published Zora Neale Hurston: In and Around Jacksonville, Florida in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. She was a featured presenter at the 20th Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts. She was awarded a Jacksonville Proclamation in 2013, and a book award from the Jacksonville Historical Commission in 2014.

Welcome to Stanton College Preparatory School

The oldest continually operating high school in Florida draws from the rich community traditions of the past while reaching for a new tradition of advanced academic achievement. Stanton, built in the 1860′s was destroyed, rebuilt, moved, and changed from a comprehensive to vocational curricula. In 1981, Stanton College Preparatory School became the Duval County School System’first magnet school. Beginning with grades 7-10, and adding one grade level each succeeding year, the first senior class of 54 students graduated in 1984. Stanton College Preparatory School now serves secondary students living within the 841 square miles of the Duval County school district and leads the Duval County Public Schools in academic achievement. Stanton consistently ranks first in the county and in the top 3 in the state for the number of National Merit Semi-Finalists.
