Procedures for Parents and Visitors

At Darnell-Cookman, we welcome parents and volunteers to campus. Your involvement with your student is vital to their success. Please be aware that for the safety and security of our whole school, we do have specific requirements for parents and visitors on campus. All visitors must present a valid, a government issued ID card and check in at the front desk.

In addition, contact with any students on campus, other than your own, will require you to fill out a volunteer application/background screening. This form MUST be filled out at least 2 days prior to shadowing, volunteering, lunch visits, or field trip chaperoning. The form can be accessed here.

Shadowing a Student:
If you are a parent and/or legal guardian and would like to shadow your student during his/her classes, you must contact Mrs. Bennett in the Counseling Office at least one full business day in advance. While you are on campus you are not allowed to interact with other students and/or the teachers. The purpose of shadowing is explicitly for you to see the schedule that your student follows and how he/she participates in class. Due to your interaction with other students on campus during shadowing, you must have a background clearance approved prior to shadowing your student. Please be sure to complete the DCPS volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled visit.

Visiting during lunch:
If you are a parent and/or legal guardian, you may eat lunch with your student during their regularly scheduled lunch time. We ask that you arrive prior to their lunch time so that you are already in the cafeteria when they are dismissed for lunch. Due to your interaction with other students in the cafeteria, you must have a background clearance approved prior to visiting your student during lunch. Please be sure to complete the DCPS volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled visit.

Parent, Teacher, Student Conferences:
A conference may be requested with an individual teacher or with a team of teachers (6th and 7th grade only) by contacting Mrs. Bennett in the Counseling Office. Please be aware that conferences are scheduled on a first come basis and it may take a week or more to get an appointment with the teachers. Parents and/or legal guardians are the only ones authorized to request a conference; however, a parent and/or legal guardian may have other interested parties (i.e. the student's mentor) attend the conference with them. Darnell-Cookman faculty and staff are not permitted to discuss any student specific information with anyone other than a parent and/or legal guardian.

Volunteering:
We encourage not just parents/guardians to volunteer but also other community members. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Activities Coordinator, Ms. Robyn Reese. All volunteers must be cleared through the DCPS volunteer application. Please be sure that you complete the volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled volunteer activity.

Chaperoning:
In order to offer special events and field trips for students we often need volunteers to chaperon such events. Chaperons must also be cleared as volunteers and will not be permitted to chaperone until after they have received full clearance by our district office. Please be sure that you complete the volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled event.
