DUVAL COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ NEW TEACHER RECRUITING
INITATIVE OFFERS PROFESSIONALS NEW PATH TO CERTIFICATION
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., APR. 18, 2017 – Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) continues to address the national teacher shortage challenge that is affecting school districts nationwide by introducing an additional initiative to recruit educators at the elementary level. “Ready, Set, Teach!” is an elementary school educator entrance program designed to assist professionals with bachelor’s degrees not in the field of education through training and support to become certified teachers. By attending an information session, a screening, and exam preparation, new candidates will be a part of a unique group of new teachers dedicated to student achievement.
“A national shortage of teachers requires large urban school districts to be aggressive and apply out of the box initiatives to fill vacant teacher positions,” said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti. “We cannot simply wait for candidates to apply for open positions but actively develop the next generation of teachers. This initiative is a step in that direction. ”
To begin the process, prospective candidates must attend an information and screening session on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the Cline Auditorium at Duval County Public Schools, 1701 Prudential Drive, Jacksonville, Florida 32207. Once the screening process is complete, approximately 60 candidates will be selected for no cost tutoring and exam preparation provided by the district’s Human Resources Department beginning on May 15, 2017. Upon passing the exam, successful candidates will be interviewed and placed within schools that have vacant positions for the 2017-2018 academic year. These newly hired teachers will then transition into the FLDOE approved Alternative Certification Program to earn a professional teaching certificate.
