PGA TOUR player Jim Furyk highlights City Year at North Shore Elementary School

The visit included learning the 9 core values of The First Tee, golf lessons and a surprise Imagination Playground donation

Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., – PGA TOUR player Jim Furyk, Duval County school superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti and THE PLAYERS staff visited North Shore Elementary School to learn about North Shore’s continued rise in academics and the power City Year, and its AmeriCorps members has on the school. THE PLAYERS Championship funds the City Year AmeriCorps math intervention team at North Shore Elementary.

City Year works to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students actually need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. City Year AmeriCorps members commit to a year of full-time service in schools, where they tutor students one-on-one, provide support in classrooms and organize school-wide initiatives to improve school culture. In doing so, they aim to increase graduation rates across the country, and change the lives of the students served.

During the visit, Furyk delivered The First Tee golf equipment to the school and discussed The First Tee’s 9 core values with the 3rd graders. THE PLAYERS surprised the 3rd graders with a donation of a new Imagination Playground. THE PLAYERS will fund The First Tee Golf in Schools Program at North Shore Elementary School.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Jim here to teach our kids about golf and The First Tee core values,” said Felicia Hardaway, principal of North Shore Elementary School. “Our kids work hard each day to maintain their grades and having some time to relax, and have fun, is truly special. The whole school is going to be so excited about the Imagination Playground!”

“THE PLAYERS Championship has been instrumental in improving educational opportunities for Duval County youth for many years,” said Dr. Vitti. “In 2011, they pledged to generate $50 million for youth-related charities by 2021, and are well beyond the halfway mark in only five years. On behalf of the entire Duval County School system, I’d like to express our gratitude to THE PLAYERS for focusing on education and making such a positive impact on the lives of our children.”

“Giving back to the community is one of the best parts about being in the PGA TOUR family,” said Jim Furyk, PGA TOUR player. “Being a resident of Northeast Florida makes Giving Back Month that much more special for myself and my family. I had a great time talking to these children about the core values of The First Tee and hopefully they will love the sport as much as I do.”

In April 2011, THE PLAYERS announced a new charitable focus, committing to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over the next 10 years. Since then, THE PLAYERS Championship has played a significant role in supporting education initiatives in Duval County. Some of the education initiatives include, but are not limited to:

• THE PLAYERS provided one of the lead gifts to the Quality Education for All initiative
• THE PLAYERS funds the City Year AmeriCorps math intervention team at North Shore Elementary
• THE PLAYERS funds Junior Achievement, which does programming at North Shore Elementary
• THE PLAYERS funds Teach for America

Finally, the Red Coat Ride Out will conclude on November 30 at Topgolf when the Red Coats host an outing for children from The Boselli Foundation afterschool program at the new facility in Jacksonville. PGA TOUR players and the Red Coats will provide instruction and surprise each child with a gift. The Boselli Foundation is a faith-based, non-profit organization striving to help children living in at-risk neighborhoods on the Northside of Jacksonville. Established in 2007 by Angi and Tony Boselli, the Youth Life Learning Centers focus on providing children with limited financial resources a holistic, comprehensive, after-school learning environment. Children are provided academic enrichment and remedial education in the areas of reading, language arts and mathematics, supplemental services, mentoring and character development.

THE PLAYERS is set to return to THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, May 9-14, 2017. More information about THE PLAYERS is available at THEPLAYERSChampionship.com.
