Communication & Social Skills at MAYPORT ELEMENTARY
It is important that your child arrives to school and is picked up from school on time. Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder benefit from structure and consistency in their educational setting. Our classrooms run on rituals and routine, which include; following a daily schedule, transitioning, and staying on-task. Along with teaching your child to appropriately participate in an educational setting, we also continuously work on managing and/or replacing negative behaviors. Our commitment to your child’s mental, emotional, and physical development cannot be made possible without your full support. We want to enforce a “team” effort during this process in order to make the most of this school year.
Arrivals: All students arriving to school with parents as walkers will enter through the main office. Parents who wish to accompany their child to class will be asked to present a photo identification and sign our Visitor’s Log in the main office. Parents will then be issued a Visitor’s Badge to escort their child to class. Parents escorting their child to the CSS department between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. will have to wait in the CSS Courtyard (in front of the CSS building) for CSS staff to open the doors at 8:30 when the first bell rings. ALL non-employees on campus must wear a Visitor’s Badge after signing in through the main office between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. All Mayport Elementary staff are expected to direct parents without a visible Visitor’s Badge to the main office.
For CSS students arriving to school with parents as car-riders, please drive to the far end of the Car Rider Loop located in our front parking lot where you will see a designated CSS student reception area. CSS Staff will be present between 8:15 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and will come to the curb to receive your child and escort him/her to class.
Early Sign-out: As you know, DCPS policy states that students cannot be signed out within 45 minutes of dismissal. If you are signing your child out before this time, you will be expected to go to the main office, present photo identification, and sign your child out in our Early Sign-out Log. The office staff will call for a CSS staff member to escort your child to the main office.
Dismissal: All students in our CSS program going home as car-riders with parents will be dismissed from a designated portion of our Bus Loop between 2:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Please plan on arriving at 2:15 p.m. when our Bus Loop gate is opened for dismissal. You will then pull up to the front of the Bus Loop. An orange cone will designate the location. Please have your CSS CAR TAG visible! Students will be accompanied to the sidewalk by our CSS staff. Students who have not been picked up by 2:45 p.m. will be accompanied to the main office where they can be signed out by a parent at 3:00 p.m.
We greatly appreciate your cooperation and support as we strive to provide a safe and secure school experience for every child!
