Tech Professionals Inspire Girls to Pursue Tech Careers

  • Twin Lakes Academy Middle School was pleased to host three female representatives from CITI Bank this week.

These Women in IT spoke to middle school girls about choosing careers in technology, and the importance of recruiting and retaining more young women into the field.

Women account for only 24% of computing jobs today but could account for more in the future.

The solution starts with education.  Our schools need more programs that appeal to girls’ interests and take a more targeted approach to encourage girls to pursue technology-related learning at each stage of their education.

By 2020, there would be 1.4 million computer-science-related jobs available, and only about 400,000 computer science graduates who have the skills necessary to apply for those jobs.

The good news is that companies, like CITI, are realizing the importance of investing in the future of tech and encouraging young people, especially girls, to consider careers in technology.

With starting salaries around $76K for most tech jobs, it’s easy to see why students would make the switch to computer science.
