    African American Spotlight: Today’s African American spotlight is on Ms. Eartha M.M. White. Born in Jacksonville, the 13th child of a former slave, Eartha Mary Magdalene White attended schools in Florida and New York. An educator and publisher, she established the Clara White Mission in honor of her mother during the Depression in the 1930s. She also ran a prison mission and donated property for community projects, including the first park for black children. In 1967 she began the Eartha M.M White nursing home, which grew into the area’s largest employer of blacks. She was also a Women’s Hall of Fame inductee in 1986.

    Today’s African American spotlight is on Mr. A. Phillip Randolph. A. Philip Randolph attended the Cookman Institute in East Jacksonville and was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement, the American labor movement, and socialist political parties. He organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first predominantly African American labor union. In the early Civil Rights movement, Randolf led the March on Washington Movement, which convinced President Roosevelt to issue an Executive Order banning discrimination in the defense industries during World War ll. His group then successfully pressured President Truman to end segregation in the armed services.

    Mr. James Weldon Johnson 

    James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville FL and was the firat African American to be Admitted to the Florida Bar. He helped found and was of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people he also wrote- Lift Every Voice and Sing, which had been called the African – American National Anthem- Mr. James Weldon Johnson 

     

    Congratulations to Ms. Moore’s 5th period class. The entire class have been wearing their masks for the last two days, Great job everyone! 

    In an exciting 20 round competition, Wiley Coli was the last one standing when he correctly spelled, Lento Congratulations Wiley! Due to a conflict in the Schedule, Zachary Pennywell Will Represent KMS for the district.

    Today’s African American spotlight is on Bessie Coleman. In 1921, a 29-year-old Bessie Coleman became the first female pilot of African American descent and the first African American to hold an international pilot license. She was known as Queen Bess. Ms. Colman’s last flight was on April 30, 1926, here in Jacksonville at Paxon Field, the present-day location of Paxon School for Advanced Studies. Ms. Bessie Coleman.

    Madison Hodge: Madison has really improved her attendance in the past week, and it is showing in her grade. When she is in class, she is participating and learning which is wonderful to see! I am hopeful that Madison will be able to focus on her schoolwork and show us how smart she really is!!- Ms. Henson

    Genesis Camacho – Genesis is new to our in-person class, but she knows the students from last year. Other students were having problems and she volunteered to have the students sit next to her, she also told the students who were giving these students grief to stop it and to be kind. Genesis is a real joy to have in class! - Ms. Henson

    Alain Luis-Fernandez- Not only is Alain a very hardworking student, but he is extremely helpful. When students are unprepared in class, he is always ready to lend a helping hand or charger in this case! Thank you for your helpfulness and preparedness. - Ms. Mayer

     

     

    African American shout out-

    Today’s African American spotlight is on the Florida Star. The Florida Star was founded by Eric O. Simpson, to give Jacksonville its own African American newspaper. The Star catered specifically to the city’s black community at a time when other local media ignored or downplayed African- American and civil rights stories. During the 1950s and 1960s, it was one of the most government to adopt reforms, endorsing black political candidates, and keeping ts readers aware of boycotts and sit-ins. The Star also became known for its sensational crime reporting, which often included scandalous headlines printed in red. In January 2007, the Florida Star launched a Georgia edition, The Georgia Star. The Florida Star

    Today’s African American spotlight is on Ms. Claudette Colvin. On March 2, 1955, a full nine months before Rosa Parks’ famous arrest, Claudette Colvin was dragged from a Montgomery bus by two police officers, arrested, and taken to an adult jail to be booked for defying bus segregation. Her arrest and her story have long since been forgotten, but it provided the spark for the Black community in Montgomery that ultimately led to Parks’ actions, the bus boycott, and the Supreme Court ruling to end segregation on buses.     Aubrey Price- Aubrey volunteered to help hang posters in building 7 and she always helps others.

    Emily Schober- Emily always lets me know about the girls' restroom without being asked and I want to give her a big thank you for her help.

    Alexandria Holden- Ali is a great math student! Ali always has a positive attitude in class and never complains. She is an excellent role model! Ali participates in class every day.

    Cole Spice- Cole is always positive and polite in class He is always willing to help others with their math. Cole is an excellent student and a math wiz! Thank you, Cole, for paying attention in class every day.

    It’s Golf Season! Are you interested in playing Golf for the World Famous Kernan Middle School Golf Team?     Today’s African American spotlight is on Mr. Matthew Henson. Born to sharecroppers on a farm in Maryland, Matthew Alexander Henson became the first African American Arctic, explorer, and is credited by many as the first man to reach the North Pole, in 1909. Henson was an associate of the American explorer Robert Peary on seven voyages over a period of nearly 23 years. Henson served as a navigator and craftsman, traded with Inuit, and learned their language. He was known as Peary’s “first man” when it came to tackling the arduous expeditions. Mr. Matthew Henson.

    Gerald A. Lawson invented the Modern Home-Video Gaming Console. Anyone who owns a PlayStation, Wii or Xbox should know Lawson's Name. He created the first home videogame system that used interchangeable cartridges, offering gamers a chance to play a variety of games and giving video-game makers a way to earn profits by selling individual; games, a business model that exists today.     Patricia bath invented the Cataract Laserphaco Probe.

    Her device used an innovative method of removing cataract Lenses with a laser, which was more accurate than the drill-like instruments that were in common use at the time. The New York ophthalmologist's Invention, patented in 1988, helped save the eyesight of millions and even restored sight to people who had been blind for more than 30 years. - Ms. Patricia Bath

    Marc Hannah invented: 3-D Graphics Technology used in films. Why it’s important? Anyone awed by the special effects in the films Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and The Abyss should thank you Chicago-native Marc Hannah. The computer scientist is one of the founders, in 1982, of the software film Silicon Graphics (now SGI), where the special- effects genius developed 3-D graphics technology that would be used in many Hollywood movies.
