Duval County Summer Reading Initiative
What is the Reading Initiative? The Duval County Summer Reading Initiative is a project under the federal Student Support and Academic Enrichment - Title IV, Part A grant project. During the last semester of the 2020-2021 school year, READ USA, Inc. will partner with Duval County Public Schools for a literacy program that school administration, teachers, parents and caregivers can use with students during the final semester of the school year and into the summer to prevent “summer slide”.
The literacy program will include supplemental books, teacher materials, parent materials and professional learning resources that teachers, parents and caregivers will be able to use with their children to sustain learning and engagement. Please visit the READ USA link below for additional resources that will be provided.
What is the Summer Slide? The Summer Slide is something all parents and educators should be concerned about as it is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year.
How will the Reading Initiative be implemented?
STEP 1 - READ USA, Inc. will organize a Book Fair at each participating school during the month of May. During the Book Fair, every student in the school will have an opportunity to select three books of interest to them. Award winning, high interest books will be purchased and provided to each school according to the grade levels and number of students at each school. Books will be available in English and Spanish.
STEP 2 – Teachers will provide guidance to students for the use of the books at home. Teachers will review strategies that students can use with the books during the time they are still in school and over the summer months.
STEP 3 – Parents will receive training. Please click on this link at the designated times to join:

During the bookfair, your child will be able to select three books of interest. Guess what? there isn’t a cost to students for the books. Parents will need to be on the lookout for the books to incorporate reading strategies at home and encourage the love of reading. If your child is not in attendance on the day of the bookfair, his/her teacher will select books for them.
