• Mr. Yates was born in Jacksonville in a neighborhood called LaVilla Park. He graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and from Occidental College with a Master's Degree in Urban Studies. In 2013, he was named the Yale University/Ford Foundation Graduate National Urban Fellow. During his time in the U.S. Navy, he worked at the Aeromedical Field Laboratory. In his civilian career, Alton has served in the U.S. Postal Service, Jacksonville's Anti-Poverty Department, and as an administrative assistant to Mayors Tanzler, Godbold, and Hazouri. At the Jacksonville Community Relations Commission, he served as Executive Director, as Manager of the Community Economic Development Center at the FCCJ, and also as Director of the Department of Regulatory and Environmental Services. Yates also served as a trustee of Florida Community College of Jacksonville after being appointed to the Florida Education Council by Governor Reubin Askew. Between 1988 and 1990, he was chairman of the FCCJ Board of Trustees. He is a past President of Leadership Jacksonville and the Northeast Florida Safety Council. A former member of St. Vincent’s Health System Advisory Board and a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and the NAACP.
