• Mr. Wendell P. Holmes was an equal education rights activist and made history when he was elected to the Duval County School Board in 1969. He was the board’s first African-American member and chairman - and the first African-American elected to any Florida county school board - helping guide Jacksonville through desegregation. 

    “He was not just a pioneer but someone who fought hard for equal rights,” said Alton Yates, himself a civil rights trailblazer. “He loved his community and fought so hard ... to give all of us something to be proud of.”
