Principal Sylvia Embry
    Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself as the newly appointed principal of Carter G. Woodson Elementary School. I consider it an honor to serve the Woodson families and community and to work with such a dedicated staff. I have had limited contact with some of the parents, faculty and staff,  and I can tell Woodson is definitely a wonderful place.

I am a product of Duval County; born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida not too far from our school. My professional history includes 17 years as an educator. I started my teaching career at Baldwin Middle/Senior High School.  After serving as a reading coach at Landmark Middle School and Andrew Jackson High School, I transitioned to assistant principal at New Berlin Elementary and Highlands Elementary.  I have been a principal for the past four years, just recently serving at John Love Elementary School. I am excited to bring my skills as an educational leader to Carter G. Woodson Elementary and work with you to ensure your child’s success.

My vision as a leader is to create a school family environment where all stakeholders are proud to work and learn. Along with the teachers and staff, we will focus on health, safety, the social/emotional well-being of our students, and greatly increasing their academic achievement. I believe wholeheartedly that every student deserves a quality education, and that only happens when the school and the families work together for the best interests of our children. With that in mind,  I will call on all faculty, staff, and parents to work as a singular unit so we can best serve our children.

I am truly honored to be given this opportunity and look forward to completely immersing myself in our school and in our community. I look forward to meeting all of you, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.
