What is the Kernan Middle School National Junior Honor Society?
Students are selected to be members of the NJHS. Members are expected to participate in chapter meetings and projects. NJHS is a student-run organization. Officers will be elected by the members. All members are expected to help with the projects sponsored by the organization.The Kernan Middle School National Junior Honor Society is a service organization for outstanding students. The KMS NJHS represents the school as guides and ambassadors. We also conduct Canned Food Drives for the Food Bank. We hold a Pet Food/Supply Drive to benefit the local humane societies and pet rescue groups. In addition, NJHS takes an active role in teacher appreciation week.
Eligibility Requirements for joining the KMS NJHS
Requirements for Candidates that are eligible for selection to this chapter must:
1. Be members of the 8th grade class.2. Have a minimum GPA of 3.5 in classes 6th, 7th and 8th grades.3. Meet the requirements of service, leadership and be of good character.Selection Process:
1. In the Fall, the NJHS Advisor will receive a GPA report of the 6th and 7th grade KMS students that have a 3.5 GPA or higher. These students become candidates.2. Eligible students receive an application. Information regarding induction will be included.3. A selection committee then chooses the top 50 candidates based on character, leadership, and service.Then What Happens?
At this meeting, a Student Activity Form will be handed out. The Student is to fill this form out and return it to the NJHS Advisor by the due date (candidates will have 10 school days to turn their paperwork in—no late paperwork will be accepted). This paperwork is to include at least 4 teacher evaluation forms in sealed envelopes.In addition, eligible students must obtain at least one (1) letter of recommendation from a member of the community. (It cannot be a letter from a family member). Completed student packets with their activity forms, letters of recommendation, essay, and teacher evaluations are presented to the NJHS Faculty Council for final approval.
And Finally...
A formal induction ceremony will be planned and parents and family members are encouraged to attend this organizational activity. This event usually occurs in the fall and is held in the café.
Once selected, members have the responsibility to continue to maintain the qualities of scholarship (3.5GPA), citizenship, character, leadership and service.
