    PROJECT NAVIGATION

A Department of Defense Education Activity

What is Project Navigation?  Project Navigation is funded by a grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA).  A licensed mental health counselor provides school-based individual counseling, group counseling, psychoeducation and family consultation services to military connected and non-military connected students (ages 5 and up) and their families. Services support families’ and students’ goals to improve social and emotional well-being, resiliency, and day-to-day functioning at home and at school.  All services are non-medical (meaning no diagnosis is needed) and are confidential.

What type of counseling is used?  Play is the language of children.  Children often do not have the ability to talk about or understand their feelings.  Play therapy and sand tray offer a non-verbal way for children to process their feelings, their reactions, and what is going on in their lives.  Play therapy includes arts, crafts, books, puppets, figurines, board games, or imaginary games.  Sand tray involves the use of miniature toys to create a “world” or story in the sand to facilitate the child’s exploration of personal issues.

Why would I consider counseling?  You know your child better than anyone.  Children may benefit from counseling if you are aware of:

    • Anxiety
    • Parental deployments or family relocations
    • Divorce or separation
    • Anger or defiance
    • School problems
    • Depression
    • Low self esteem
    • Traumatic experiences

Can Navigation provide services to my child without permission?  No.  To obtain services, a parent or legal guardian must sign a consent form.  Parents may cancel services at any time by contacting the counselor.

Will my child enjoy going to counseling?  Children usually enjoy counseling sessions because it is a special time dedicated only to them.  Sessions give children breaks from their daily routines and often provide stress relief.  At home, children may talk about toys and games they have used in counseling, or they may display coloring worksheets and craft projects they have created in a counseling session.

What is the cost?  Services to students and their families are free.  The program costs are covered by a generous grant from DoDEA.
