Windy Hill Leadership and Technology Magnet (WHLTM), the “Home of the Patriots”, is located in the Southside of Jacksonville, Florida. The school was erected in 1956 under the leadership of Superintendent Iva T. Sprinkle. Windy Hill Leadership and Technology Magnet is a true neighborhood school and services approximately 700 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. The students live in the surrounding community consisting of single-family homes, trailer parks, and various apartment complexes.
WHLTM offers a challenging and varied curriculum aligned with the standards-based model adopted by the school district to meet the needs of all students. Windy Hill Learning Leaders emphasize content and performance standards throughout their daily lessons. They meet on an eight-day cycle by grade level or subject area for further training as observation and assessment data indicate those needs. Our effective instruction, rituals and routines are framed in a traditional elementary school design with knowledgeable grade level chairs who act as liaisons of their grade level to ensure our schoolwide goals are achieved. WHLT is has an art studio, music lab, computer lab, and inquiry lab (media center) which affords students an opportunity to develop in the arts areas and prepare students to thrive in a competitive global economy.
In August 2014, WHLTM was designated a Leader in Me school. As of July 2015, we are one of 2036 Leader in Me schools. The Leader in Me is Franklin Covey’s whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. This sets WHLT apart due to the school’s efforts to become a premier leadership magnet. The content from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component of the overall Leader in Me process. The 7 Habits is a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal, which are secular in nature and common to all people and cultures.
Our unique features are the WHLTM schedule, low class size, and increased Professional Learning Community (PLC) time for teacher collaboration and training. We have an outstanding Assistant Principal, several National Board Certified Teachers, 35 Highly Qualified teachers, one Reading Coach, one Math Coach, three full-time ESOL paraprofessionals, two full-time general education paraprofessionals, three part-time paraprofessionals, and an amazing office staff. Since we recognize the success in high expectations of our Code of Cooperation Plan, and simply operate in a true spirit of excellence, the L.E.A.D. (Learn, Excel, Achieve, and Dream) principle serves as our Guidelines for Success. WHLTM students, faculty, and staff L.E.A.D. each and every day. Every child is a LEADer and we expect them to LEAD at WHLTM!
