Ms. Emeka Barclay, Dean of Students & Standards Coach

My name is Emeka Barclay and I am currently the Dean of Students and Standards Coach at Andrew Jackson High School. I am a former high school and middle school Language Arts, Social Studies, and Greenpower Racing teacher.  Being a teacher for over two decades in rural, urban, and suburban school districts has given me so much respect for what educators everywhere do.  I know the importance of building relationships with students, with staff, and with the community.  Schools are villages and it takes villages to build and strengthen nations. I am new to the Jacksonville area, but I am learning and loving all that I can about this amazing place.
Kofi Annan said "Education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rest the cornerstones of freedom, democracy, and sustainable human development."  Kofi Annan was a former Secretary General for the United Nations.  Nothing is more important to me than ensuring that our students, not only receive a quality education, but that they feel love, embraced, and accepted in our school.  Unless we are educating the whole child and meeting their needs, we are failing them.  For some, that may seem like a lot.  But, who becomes a teacher for the pay or the days off?
I have found my purpose.  I love teaching, learning, and creating resources and environments for students and teachers.  I love supporting students as they develop into their future dynamic selves. I love seeing students celebrated for their efforts, creativity, ingenuity and their learning.  I constantly want to grow and learn how to better the educational experience for students and educators.  I believe that when educators work smart, students are inspired to work hard.  Every student can be successful, contributing digital citizens of our global society.  I will happily support teachers as they motivate students of varying learning abilities and learning styles to be the best learners they can be.  When students are involved in their learning, they are empowered and they are engaged.  Learning shouldn't end at the last bell; it should end with the last breath.
