Greetings James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory,
My name is Jessica Lumpkin, LMHC, NCC, and this email comes to you as an introduction. I am the new Child and Youth Behavioral Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC) at James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory (JWJ). As the MFLC, I am available to provide non-medical counseling support to faculty, staff, parents, and students for issues amenable to short-term problem resolution such as school adjustment issues, deployment and reunion adjustments, and parent-child communications. All non-medical counseling support offered to active-duty members and their families are short-term, solution-focused, and CONFIDENTIAL.
On Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, I am here to assist JWJ military students in managing life transitions and stressors they might face during the school day. Some examples of common concerns that I can help with include the following: academic issues, peer relationships, stress, self-esteem, transitioning/moving, deployment-related issues, grief and loss, and feelings of isolation.
Additionally, I work in conjunction with other services and are available to provide appropriate referrals. I can provide individual support services and support groups during the school day for students. During the student’s lunch, the students are able to report to room 117 for lunch bunch. Lunch bunch is a time for students to connect with the other military students and short-term, solution-focused non-medical counseling. Also, I support faculty and staff with behavioral intervention in classrooms, modeling behavioral techniques, and facilitating psycho-educational groups.
In order for JWJ military students to receive MFLC services, they must have a signed parental consent form. I passed out the MFLC consent the first week of school. If you would like me to meet individually to discuss how I can support your student(s) or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or give me a call. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
Respectfully,
Jessica N. Lumpkin, LMHC, NCC
