    Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the new Mattie V. Rutherford Education Center (MVREC) for the 2018-2019 school year.  I hope you are focused on achieving your academic goals and completing your time at MVREC.  I am very excited and enthusiastic about the new changes at MVREC for this school year. As always, students are my main focus at this educational institution.   You will be held to high standards and expected to demonstrate the skills, abilities, knowledge, and potential to be successful academically and socially.

Beginning this school year, the district has changed the alternative school model for MVREC.  We now serve 4th through 9th grade students.   First and most importantly, a safe and healthy environment that is conducive for student learning is our main priority.  The district has provided additional resources to ensure students have the best opportunity to obtain a great education in a safe environment. Administrators, instructors, and support staff are committed to working as a cohesive unit to ensure that you feel safe and ready to learn.   We are committed to being visible, accessible to assist you at all times.

A uniform policy will be implemented.  All students will wear a white polo style shirt and khaki pants only. Students will not be allowed to wear black or blue pants and male students will not be required to wear a neck-tie.  You are not permitted to wear boots, pull-over hoodies, hats, bandannas, or any other head garments on campus. Also, you are not allowed to bring any electronic devices (iPods, cell phones, iPads, MP3 players, game systems etc.) to school.  Please leave all prohibited items at home.  If any electronic devices or prohibited items are brought to school, they will be confiscated by school personnel and will not be returned to the student.  Attached to this letter is the complete uniform policy and items students are prohibited from bringing to school.  You are expected to come to school prepared and ready to learn daily. All necessary school supplies such as pens, pencils, paper, and folder are mandatory each and every day.

I embrace the new changes and extremely excited about the start of the new school year.  I am dedicated to ensuring we provide to best opportunity for our students to achieve greatness at MVREC.  Every year brings new challenges and opportunities for our students.   Collectively, we must all work together to ensure our students meet the goals academically and socially.    As the educational leader of this institution, I challenge each of you to maximize your potential each and everyday.

    Professionally,

    Maurice NeSmith, Principal
