  • Procedures for Parents and Visitors

At Darnell-Cookman, we welcome parents and volunteers to campus. Your involvement with your student is vital to their success. For the safety and security of our wschool, there are specific requirements for parents/guardians and visitors on campus. All visitors must present a valid government issued ID card and check in at the front desk in the main office.

In addition, contact with any students on campus, other than your own, will require you to fill out a volunteer application/background screening. This form MUST be filled out at least 1 week prior to shadowing, volunteering, lunch visits, or field trip chaperoning. The form can be accessed here.

    Shadowing a Student:
If you are a parent and/or legal guardian and would like to shadow your student during his/her classes, please contact Mrs. Bennett in the Counseling Office 24 hours in advance of the class you would like to visit. A background clearance with approved is required prior to shadowing your student. Please be sure to complete the DCPS volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled visit.

    Visiting during lunch:
If you are a parent and/or legal guardian, you may eat lunch with your student during their regularly scheduled lunch time. We ask that you arrive prior to their lunch time. An approved background clearance is required prior to visiting your student during lunch. Please be sure to complete the DCPS volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled visit.

    Parent, Teacher, Student Conferences:
A conference may be requested with an individual teacher or with multiple teachers by contacting Mrs. Bennett in the Counseling Office. Parents and/or legal guardians are the only ones authorized to request a conference; however, a parent and/or legal guardian may have other interested parties (i.e. the student's mentor) attend the conference with them. Darnell-Cookman faculty and staff are not permitted to discuss student specific information with anyone other than a parent and/or legal guardian.

    Volunteering:
We encourage parents/guardians and community members to volunteer their time. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Assistant Principal Mr. Zakaria. All volunteers must be cleared through the DCPS volunteer application. Please be sure that you complete the volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled volunteer activity.

    Chaperoning:
Special events and field trips are made possible for students with the help of parent/guardian volunteers. Chaperones must be cleared as volunteers before assisting with an event. DCPS provides the clearance necessary for parents/guardians who are interested in chaperoning events. Please complete the volunteer application at least one week prior to any scheduled event.
