District Athletic Training and Sports Medicine
-
The Duval County Public School District is a leader in the state of Florida in the areas of education and athletics. The over 8,000 participating high school student athletes have access to a highly qualified sports medicine team at all seventeen public high schools. Each sports medicine team has a full-time licensed, certified athletic trainer (LAT, ATC) that works collaboratively with at least one volunteer team physician. This program is the result of a strong relationship between the school district and the community partners listed below:
Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program Wolfsons Childrens Hospital Jacksonville Jaguars
Nemours Childrens Health Brooks Rehabilitation Jacksonville University
University of North Florida Mayo Clinic Duval County Medical Society
The school district also created the unique position of Supervisor, District Sports Medicine. The supervisor, Jerry Stevens, LAT, ATC, ensures that evidenced-based, research-backed "Best Practices" in athletic training and sports medicine are implemented for all our high school sports programs. This is the only position of its kind in Florida and assures that the job performance of each athletic trainer is evaluated by a peer in the athletic training and sports medicine profession.
