Information for 5th grade students and parents!
Description: The Film Club is designed to give students in fifth grade experience with the movie making process. I, Ms. Campbell, the art teacher, operate the Film Club. The club is limited to 12 students in order to be able to create a more complicated project than could be completed with a full class. This includes creating and writing a story and script; creating sets, props, and costumes; creating special effects; operating the video camera, directing, and acting. The final result will be a finished film on DVD which each student will receive. The film will debut in a “World Premiere Event” at the end of the year!
Why do we have a film club?
Movie making connects the arts to the real world in a way that students have direct experience with –the movies. It also shows them a practical application of the arts in the various careers of the film industry. The Film Club is also a great way we integrate our magnet focus on literacy and technology into the arts. The students will write the story for the movie together, focusing on story structure and dialog. The movie is created through use of technology such as green screen technology, video cameras, and editing software.
How does it work?
There is no cost to participate- that’s right – it’s FREE! However, before applying both students and parents should be aware of the time commitment and responsibilities. Parents of selected students will be required to attend an introductory meeting to discuss the details of specific film club requirements and responsibilities.
Although the students and I will have short meetings during the school day, most of the work is done after school. We will meet after school on Fridays, from 3:00 – 5:00.
Club meetings are conducted during Teacher Directed P.E. time on Fridays, every other week.
The required introductory meeting for selected students and parents will be on September 22nd at 6:00 PM.
Film Club Requirements and Admission:
Because the Film Club is limited to 12 students, there is an admission process. Three students will be chosen from each of the fifth grade classes.
Film Club membership is dependent on:
1: They must maintain at least a B average in Conduct.
2: Students are responsible for completing all classwork and homework to the best of their ability.
3: Film Club students must maintain satisfactory attendance at school. This includes getting to school on time!
Classroom teachers will review the applicants and assist with the selection process, using the above criteria.
To apply for admission into the Film Club, students must submit a written letter to me, Ms. Campbell. The letter must address three topics:
- Why do you want to be in the Film Club?
- Name a favorite movie and why it is your favorite.
- What part of making a movie are you most excited about (operating the camera, writing the story, acting, special effects, creating sets, etc.) and why.
I will not be looking at spelling, grammar, or proper letter form. I simply want to see that the student has enough interest to complete the letter and address the three topics, as well as the responsibility to bring it in by the due date. If I have more applicants than I have space for, I will judge the letters according to the amount of detail! Writing is a major part of film club (it is not just a drama club)!
Letters are due, without exception, on Monday September 19th at 8:30 AM.
Each 5th grade homeroom teacher will get an envelope from me for collecting the letters. Any student may turn them into me early. I recommend turning it in early to be sure to make it by the deadline! Being absent on the due date will not give you an extra day to turn it in.
PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR NAME ON IT!
The Film Club members will be announced on Tuesday, September 20th. Accepted students will receive a permission slip to be turned in at the introductory meeting on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:00 PM.
