The International Baccalaureate Program at Samuel Wolfson High School
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Wolfson allows students to participate in an internationally recognized course of study that is recognized by colleges and universities in over 100 countries. The liberal arts curriculum prepares students for the challenges of college like no other high school program. Students exercise their intellectual rigor through elevated international standards while relating their academics to the realities of the world beyond the classroom.

The mission of our IB programme at Wolfson is to provide a sense of belonging. Every IB Wolfpack member knows that being in IB is more than its educational programme and certificates. At our heart we are motivated by a mission to create a better world through education. We promote intercultural understanding and respect, not as an alternative to a sense of cultural and national identity, but as an essential part of life in the 21st century.
The IB Curriculum
IB Diploma Programme students study six courses at higher level or standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5. At Wolfson High School we currently offer the following subjects in each group:
Group 1: English A: Literature
Group 2: Spanish B, Latin, French
Group 3: History (Americas)
Group 4: Biology, Environmental Systems and Societies
Group 5: Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches, Mathematics: Applications & Interpretations
Group 6: Visual Arts, Film, Theater, Environmental Systems & Societies (group 3 or 4), ITGS or students may study a second group 2.
In addition the program has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding:
The extended essay is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.
Theory of knowledge is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).
Creativity, action, service requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.
