As Principal of Alfred I. duPont Middle School, I want to take this opportunity to share my excitement as we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year. I want to thank the entire Dragon Nation for their commitment to excellence as we continue to establish ourselves as one of the premier middle schools in Duval county, one with a rich tradition of high academic standards. Last school year I was privileged to represent duPont as the 2021 DCPS Principal of the Year, 2021 DCPS Middle School Principal of the Year, and the 2021 Excellence in Dual Language Leadership Award recipient. While the aforementioned honors marked the pinnacle of my professional career, I was most proud to receive the 2021 School of the Year Award from the Embassy of Spain. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff as we continue our efforts to transform our learning community into a place where our scholars can learn, connect, and grow.
This year I am happy to announce that our teaching and learning teams will be arranged in Living Learning Communities (LLCs) where our faculty along with input from students, will determine a theme or area of interest for the 2021-2022 school year.
Living Learning Communities as defined by the University of Pittsburgh are:
“Specialized living environments that connect students inside- and outside-the-classroom experiences. Each LLC is unique, but all are centered on a distinctive theme or academic interest area. Students who choose to live in an LLC have a direct connection to their classroom experience, access to intentional events and programs, and dedicated staff members who work to make the community a success.”
While we understand that our students do not “live” on campus we recognize that we are critical providers of the support our children need to be successful in post-secondary education and beyond. We believe that by adopting this model we are cultivating a safe and nurturing environment where our students can learn and grow.
In addition to our academic programs, students may try out for football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball, track, and swimming. We will continue with our Before School Enrichment Program which is available Monday through Friday from 7:30am –9:00am for a small fee of $60.00 per month. Please be sure to read this entire newsletter for more information about athletics and the morning program.
Our 6th Grade Summer Transition Camp will be held July 28, 2021 and July 29, 2021 from 9:00am-12:00pm. Please refer to page 3 of the newsletter for more information. Parents, we ask that you support our team by joining our School Advisory Council (SAC), and PTSA. The School Advisory Council and PTSA meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30pm, and 6:00pm respectively. Please stop by the Parent Resource Room during orientation for more information on our parent organizations. Don’t forget to join us for Open House September 14, 2021 at 6:00pm.
