    Below are directions for buying tickets and attending any sporting events at JSMAL.

     

    Before we have our first home game, I want you all to be aware of the new procedures for purchasing tickets to the games.

    All tickets must be purchased through “GoFan”  www.gofan.co(find and select Stilwell)

    NO tickets will be sold at the door. Please show ticket receipt at the door for entry.  Preferably from your phone or tablet.

    Due to Covid restrictions:
    Tickets will be sold at 30% of gym capacity
    Please only sit in designated areas (There are x's on the bleacher seats for you to sit)
    Masks must be worn
    Social distancing is required
    and Temperatures will be taken for all players, coaches, and fans that enter the gym.

    We will not have any concessions.

  • Middle School Sports

    Dear Patriot family,

    Progress reports come out this week.  This is just a report of your cadet's current progress midway through the first quarter.  Contact your cadet's teacher if you have any issues or questions about his or her grades.

    Open House is virtual this year.  Our virtual open house is this Thursday, September 24.  It begins promptly at 6:00pm on the JSMAL Cadet and Cadre channel.  I will chat for a few minutes then you will follow a virtual bell schedule through your cadets schedule.  Teachers will help you navigate their teams page and what happens for cadets who are in the building.  This is not the time to chat about your child's progress.  Schedule a parent-teacher conference through the guidance counselor if you need to address specific concerns with your child. 

    Fall sports tryouts begin this week!   If you do not have your physical and sports paperwork by tomorrow, please reach out to the coach to let them know your intent to tryout.  Each coach determines the length of the try-outs, not me or the Athletic Director.  Forms are posted on our website (www.duvalschools.org/Stilwell).  They were also emailed to you and your cadet last week, but I will attach another copy here.  If technology fails you or you don't have a way to print these out, stop by the front office and we have paper copies available.

    To be eligible for middle school sports, your cadet needs a 2.0 minimum GPA (That is a C average).  Sixth graders will not have a GPA from elementary school.  They get a buy this year.  Cadets need a recent sports physical from a doctor, and have filled out all the required forms.  They also need health insurance.  Duval County Public Schools offers insurance for $21-27 per month. Applications are at the front office if you need this insurance.  All cadets can try out for sports, even if you are in Duval HomeRoom full time.

    Football - Monday, 9/21/2020 at 3:30 - 6 pm.  Wear a white t-shirt, blue shorts and bring water bottles.  DVHR students should arrive dressed out with completed paperwork. Coach Grant is the head coach.  His email address is grante2@duvalschools.org.

    Volleyball - Wednesday, 9/23/2020 at 3:45 - 5 pm.  Bring water bottles.  DVHR students should arrive dressed out with completed paperwork.  Coach Thompson is the head coach.  Her email address is thompsonn2@duvalschools.org.

  • Great News Patriots

    Great news Patriots... Middle School sports begins on Monday, September 21.  We will start with Football and Volleyball.  Stay tuned for details about try-outs.  Our Athletic Director, Coach Larry Edwards, will be a district meeting today to finalize the details.

     

    Before your cadet can practice or try out, he or she must have athletic paperwork turned in.  I am attaching all the forms needed.  Getting this done will expedite your cadet getting the opportunity to try-out for one of these.

  • 2nd Quarter Decisions

    Dear parents and guardians,

     

    Soon you will have to make a decision on how your cadet will attend school for the 2nd quarter. The following deadlines and actions have been established to assist parents in working with these plans as we approach the second quarter of instruction:

     

    • DH students electing to remain in DH:  No parent action needed
    • DH students requesting return to Brick and Mortar:  Parent must complete a DH cancellation form 
    • Brick and Mortar students requesting change to DH:  Parent must complete a DH selection form for 2nd quarter 

     

    Duval Homeroom (DH) Selection and Cancellation Forms are available to parents through the Parent Focus Account in the same location as previously found.  Schools will maintain the ability to make selections for parents if they have any difficulty with linking parent accounts.   I have attached a copy of what the forms look like.  If you can't access your parent focus account, use these and turn them in to my front office or you can email them to Mr. Errico (erricod@duvalschools.org).

     

    • Forms will be available from 9/15-9/25
    • 9/25-10/15: Schools adjust master schedules to accommodate requested changes
    • 10/19: Students begin quarter 2 with new schedules as needed.
    • Note:  Technology needs questions remain on the form and based on answers will generate the checkout form in FOCUS.

    Dear Patriots,COVID-19 Return to School Tree

    It's a great day to be JSMAL proud!  This week marks the first change to the hybrid schedule for our cadets attending school in brick and mortar.  6th graders in hybrid, will come five days this week, not four.  7th and 8th graders are still coming three days this week.  On Sept 21st, all hybrid students in 6-8 will come to school five days a week.  We will continue to do temperature checks each morning and go to holding areas.  Lunch in the mess hall will also remain the same, with cadets 6 feet apart.  All cadets and cadre will wear a mask.

    Cadets in Duval Virtual HomeRoom will stay at home all five days a week through the end of the first quarter (Oct 16).  At that time, you have the choice whether or not your cadet will remain in DVHR or come back to the building five days a week.  As we get closer, I will be asking for your decision so that we can modify our master schedule to keep things in balance.  If you decide to have your cadet return, they will keep the same courses, not in the same order and I cannot guarantee they will keep the same teachers.  Although we will certainly try to as best we can.

    It's important to remember to leave your cadet at home if he or she is not feeling well or exhibits any of the Covid-19 symptoms.  We have had a few positive covid cases that resulted in immediate quarantine and case tracing.   We may not be able to stop the virus, but we can prevent further spreading.  I will attach the contact tracing flow chart the district is using to determine who is quarantined and for how long.

    We are already mid way through the first quarter.  Progress reports will go out this week.  Have cadets check FOCUS for current grades and what assignments are missing.  Reach out to your cadets teacher if you have any questions.

    We still have not heard a word about when middle school athletics will be starting up.  High school football was in action for the first time this past Friday, so that is a good sign.

    Parents and guardians, please have a conversation about what is and is not appropriate to discuss while online in Teams, Oneview, school email, chats and any other DCPS platform.  I get notified each time something inappropriate is typed and it's tied to your cadets student number.  There are key words and phases that get flagged, even if your cadet is kidding.  In addition, it's super important that cadets do not give anyone (expect a parent or guardian) his or her password.

    This year we will have our open house virtually, in Teams, on September 24 and it will start at 6 pm.  I will open the meeting in our cadet and cadre channel, like I do every morning.  Then cadets will move to each teacher channel on a modified bell schedule.  I will send out a detailed schedule in next weeks email.

    Lastly, I will have an open SAC/PTSA meeting at JSMAL this Tuesday, September 15, at 6:00 pm in our media center.  I need your voice and your help this year.

  • Weekly Update

    Dear Parents and Supporters,

    It has been truly a memorable opening of schools.  Thank you for all your patience and understanding.  We have had some obstacles and frustrations, but we are so glad we are able to meet our parents needs with two options of attending school.  The hybrid model certainly has helped us keep students more protected, socially distant and wearing masks consistently.  We unfortunately had to make some schedule changes last week as they closed out the moves to DVHR.  Since we did not know who was going to go Hybrid and DVHR, we had to wait until that was complete before leveling the rooms.  Some rooms had 3-5 cadets in them, others had 20.  We are currently screening cadets for reading.  Once that is complete, your cadet may have an elective change and be placed in intensive reading.  Those should be the last changes for now.  When students start coming back from Duval HomeRoom, that will most likely cause more changes in order to keep class size level.  We don’t know who will come back to brick and mortar and when, making it difficult to plan now.

    So, who can I email when I have an issue?  Here are some guidelines that I hope will help you get any issues resolved more effectively.

    - If you have attendance issues in any given period, or you feel your cadet has been marked incorrectly, please reach out to the teacher directly.  For excuse notes, illnesses and doctors’ appointments, email them to Ms. Adams at adamse@duvalschools.org.

    - If you have technology issues, preventing your cadet from getting online, email the teachers using another device.  If that is not possible, call the school.  If you have a DCPS laptop not working, bring it in for a replacement.  If you need internet, you need to use your parent FOCUS portal to request a hotspot.  If you cannot do this, contact Ms. Adams at adamse@duvalschools.org or Mr. Errico at erricod@duvalschools.org.  Either one can do this manually for you.  We do not have the hotspots on site.  Once we enter the information, or you do, they send it to us and we call for you to pick up when it arrives.  If you need a DCPS laptop, use the same process I described for internet.  As a last resort, download Microsoft teams on any smart phone or tablet and your cadet will be seen by the teacher online and he or she won’t miss the instruction or assignments.

    Grades – These always go through the teacher.  If you have met with the teacher and are still not satisfied, email me or Mr. Errico.  Full transparency, administrators cannot change grades, only the teacher can.  We can help mediate if the need arises.

    IEP’s in Gen Ed – Each cadet who has an IEP, also has a VE teacher who supports him or her in their reading and math classes.  Those teachers should have already reached out to you.  If they have not, please reach out to Ms. McNutt at mcnutta@duvalschools.org.  She overseas all the VE teachers and facilitates the IEP meetings.

    IEP’s in SLA – Coach Grant is the lead instructor in the SLA building.  Please reach out to him if you are having an issue and the teacher cannot resolve it.  His email is grante2@duvalschools.org

    504’s – Your cadet’s guidance counselor can help you with any 504 needs.

    Athletics – Coach Edwards is our athletic director.  He can be reached at edwardsl2@duvalschools.org.  We do not have any updates regarding the start of sports this year. We are very optimistic and hoping to hear something this month.

    Team Up – Our free afterschool enrichment program is open!  Contact Mr. Tommie Fox at foxt1@duvalschools.org for your spot.

    The upcoming general election includes more than the presidential race.  It also includes a referendum to support public schools.  We urge everyone in our school community to register and vote. The deadline to register is Oct. 5, but we recommend you do it right away by going to duvalelections.com.  If you are already registered, you can request a mail-in ballot at the same website. For more information about the half-penny referendum for school facilities, go to ourduvalschools.org.

    Yearbooks – 7th and 8th graders.  We have extra yearbooks from last year.  Cost is $25.  Just come to the main office.  We will take cash only. 

    Open House – We will host a virtual open house on Microsoft Teams on September 24, at 6:00 pm.  We will start on the Cadets and Cadre channel where my morning announcements are located. You will then move to each teacher on a schedule, just like your cadets do.  I will give more details as we get closer to the date.  Just note that we will all start together at 6:00 pm.

    SAC/PTSA – Help!  I need leaders and members to help me get the year started.  Let me know if you can help.

  • Week 2 Updates

    Happy Sunday Patriots,

    As we start Week 2, I want to tell you how impressed we were bringing up JSMAL here in the building and on Duval HomeRoom.  Yes, we had some district wide glitches with Microsoft Teams, but everyone was so flexible, patient and understanding.  We have changed the way we bring in cadets with taking temperatures, social distancing, wearing masks AND we are teaching our DVHR cadets online in addition to teaching face to face.  All of our normal procedures have changed.  We have been stretched, changed, challenged and everyone has stepped up to make this work, in spite of all the obstacles.  I am one proud principal!

    Cadets did a great job wearing their mask.  The mess hall looked and felt so different.  It was awesome to have so many of you on the announcements that first day of school.  Parents, we did get three water stations delivered.  You may continue to send your cadet with a water bottle, but just know cadets do have the ability to get drinking water here at school.

    Just a few updates for this week.  

    1. Only 6th and 7th graders are in the building tomorrow (Monday, Aug 24).
    2. 8th graders and Duval HomeRoom are online tomorrow (Monday, Aug 24).
    3. We have only accounted for approximately 2/3 of our cadets. Please make sure you are logging in to your online classes when you are supposed to and you are coming to school when you are supposed to. Attendance is really important for schools, especially the first 10 days, so we don't lose any staff members.
    4. Cadets attending brick and mortar - If your cadet needs additional face masks, reach out to his or her first period teacher. Many of them are holding onto the mask in the event he or she loses it.

    6. Cadets on DVHR - On Wed and Thurs this week we are having an instructional material drive through pick up from 4:30 to 5:30 in our bus loop.  All our textbooks and resources are online, however, if your cadet would prefer a physical copy of a workbook or text book, you can come to the drive up this week.  The following textbooks/workbooks will be available on Aug 26 and Aug 27 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. 

    Science - All grade Levels except Biology
    Math - All grade Levels except Geometry
    Social Studies - 6th Grade US History only
    ELA - None available.  All online.

    Schedule for the week:
    Monday - 6th and 7th at school. 8th grade and DVHR are online in teams.

  • When do I go to school?

    Dear JSMAL Parent/Guardian, 

     As we prepare to come back to school this school year, we wanted to ensure that you had the most up to date information for your student(s). If you are coming to campus for school, there will be a different plan for your individual grade level.  The grade level will dictate on which days your child will be face-to-face (i.e., on school grounds) vs. which days your child will engage in classes virtually. Your student’s schedule will reflect the grade and the courses in which your child will be enrolled.   

    Students in 6th Grade will attend face-to-face classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  They will attend classes virtually on Wednesdays.   

    Students in 7th Grade will attend face-to-face classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.  They will attend classes virtually on Tuesday and Friday   

     Students in 8th Grade will attend face-to-face classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. They will attend class virtually on Monday and Thursday.

     Attendance Schedule

    Students that have selected, and approved for, Duval HomeRoom will be scheduled into course indicated as DH courses.  They will attend all classes virtually during the regular school day and will follow the FOCUS Duval HomeRoom Schedule, using Microsoft Teams.  Whether you are here at JSMAL or on Teams at home, I will start each day with the Pledge, Cadet Creed, and announcements every morning at 0830 on the Cadet and Cadre channel.

    This year it is vital that you and your child have access to their FOCUS account as that will be the primary way  in which students will check their schedules, keep up with academic progress, and receive progress reports and report cards.  From bus stop registration to school attendance options, there are multiple processes that will be managed through parent accounts in FOCUS.  To be prepared, please make sure you have established your account through our website. 

    Lastly, we will have a make up Orientation for all students (Hybrid or on Duval HR) on Monday, Aug 17 at 5pm.  This will be online.  Here is the link to join us.

  • Orientation

    Good afternoon Patriots,

     

    It's been such a long spring and summer hasn't it.  We have missed our cadets so much and are eagerly awaiting their return to the building.  Many of you have opted for starting school in Duval HomeRoom so we won't get to see everyone.  However, eventually we hope to have a vaccine for this virus and we can return to normal.

     

    Now that we have an official start date, we have begun the process of scheduling and planning for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year.   The first thing on the calendar is Orientation.  For 7th graders, Orientation will be on August 10 at 10:00 am.  This will be online in goto meeting.  See link below.

  • Week 14

    Dear parents and guardians,

     

    We have an exciting week ahead of us, starting with the city championship football game at Ed White on Tuesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m.  We will take on Mandarin Middle School for the title. Let's show our support for Patriot Nation!

     

    Principal Raulerson from Westside HS invites 8th graders who will have completed Alg 1 to come to a presentation about the acceleration programs at Westside High School. Invites went home with your students this week.  If you are interested in the Early College program it starts at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow at Westside HS.  If you are interested in the AICE program it starts at 6:15 p.m. You are welcome to attend both.  I have attached the flyer for the two specific programs and wanted to make sure that you were aware of the different programs, the requirements for entry and upcoming event.

     

    Principal Battest from Ed White HS invites 8th graders to come see what they have to offer.  Ed White Magnet Showcase will be on Dec 16, from 10:30-12:30 p.m.

     

    Coming up....2nd quarter progress report cards will go out this week.
