teachers waving pompoms for paraprofessionals

April 3, 2025 – With more than 70 paraprofessionals, Oak Hill Academy has one of the largest paraprofessional teams in Team Duval, and each one was recognized on Wednesday during a special recognition ceremony for Paraprofessional Appreciation Day.

Principal Stephanie Smith said it was vital to show gratitude and appreciation for the selfless acts of their paraprofessional team at Oak Hill, a school designed specifically for students with autism spectrum disorders and other related disabilities.

Each paraprofessional was recognized for their years of service, with Cornelius Gaines being the longest serving paraprofessional at Oak Hill. Gaines has been a paraprofessional for 23 years with Team Duval.

“Mr. Gaines is committed to students, gains really strong relationships with them, and students gravitate towards him,” said Smith.

Employee of the Year paraprofessional Aron Muse was also highlighted for the work he does at Oak Hill. Muse joined the Oak Hill paraprofessional team a few years ago following his retirement from the district’s Human Resources team.

“Students build a very special bond with [Mr. Muse] as one of the few male staff at the school,” said Smith.
