Back to School Bash

Aug. 7, 2025 – Thousands of educators from across the district filled the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, proudly wearing their school shirts, dancing, cheering, holding up signs, and smiling from ear to ear.  This was the “Back to School Bash,” a special event designed to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our teachers and Team Duval’s first-ever A-grade.

"I think it’s a great thing because it gets everyone started, ready, and pumped up for the new school year,” said Donnasha Waters, a teacher at Northsore Elementary School.

In addition to enjoying activities – ranging from line dancing to throwing oversized beach balls – teachers heard several inspiring guest speakers. This included former Freedom Writer Dr. Manny Scott, as well as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christopher Bernier, School Board Chair Charlotte Joyce, and Mayor Donna Deegan.

Thanks to community partners like the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, Community First Credit Union of Florida, and the City of Jacksonville, no taxpayer dollars were spent on the event.

“This is about making sure our teachers understand that they’re powerful, that they have a purpose, that they have an impact –– and really encourage that going into this new school year,” said Dr. Bernier.
