August 6, 2026 - For many children, the first day of school is the beginning of an exciting educational journey. Duval County's Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program helps make that transition a positive one by providing young learners with the skills and confidence they need before entering kindergarten. The free Florida program is available to eligible 4-year-olds and focuses on developing early literacy, math, language, and social-emotional skills that support future academic success.

Through Duval County Public Schools, VPK students learn in a safe, nurturing elementary school environment led by a certified educator. Children participate in engaging, age-appropriate instruction while enjoying activities such as art, music, physical education, recess, and structured play. Students are also introduced to technology and STEM concepts, helping build curiosity and a love of learning from an early age.

The Early Learning Coalition of Duval emphasizes that VPK gives children a valuable head start by strengthening pre-reading, pre-math, language, and social skills before kindergarten. Families can choose from school-year and summer VPK options, with programs designed to meet state standards for kindergarten readiness.
