Gateway Conferene Awards Ceremony May 2025

June 23, 2025 – From the red carpet, to the flashing lights, and to the lively music. The excitement was tangible at the Florida Theater as over 400 student-athletes were honored during a beloved annual tradition – the Duval County Public Schools’ Gateway Conference Awards Ceremony, which recognizes athletic and academic excellence.

“The Gateway Conference Award Ceremony celebrates so many DCPS student-athletes and represents countless hours of practice, unwavering commitment, and the spirit of teamwork,” said Director of Athletics Tammie Talley. “Honoring the student-athletes and coaches at this big event is a testament to their hard work and the bright futures that lie ahead.”

Every year, student-athletes from 22 team and individual sports compete in the Gateway Conference, which is composed of the district’s 17 high schools with sporting programs. Each sport’s tournament culminates with the crowning of a Gateway Conference Champion, all of whom are recognized with medallions, plaques, and other awards. Coaches additionally cast votes to honor the best players from each team, also known as All-Gateway Conference Champions.

Academics are also central to the annual celebration.

“Success in sports is fleeting, but the knowledge gained through academics lasts a lifetime,” added Talley. “For our student-athletes, balancing sports and education shapes not just champions on the field, but also leaders in life.”

All Gateway Academic-Athletes – or students with the highest weighted GPA on their teams – receive special recognition. Gateway sporting programs with the highest average GPAs include Boys Tennis (4.58), Volleyball (4.45), Boys Golf (4.44), Boys Swimming (4.41), and Girls Swimming (4.40).

"There’s a reason why you call them student athletes. You want them to be students first and athletes second,” shared Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christopher Bernier, who helped present many of the night's honors.

Outstanding coaches and administrators were also recognized for their contributions. The Mike Houser Outstanding Coach Award was presented to one head coach in each Gateway Sport. The Bernard Wilkes Award – which honors those who exemplify the same enthusiasm, charisma, and sincerity embodied by the former district coach – was presented to Fletcher High School Principal Dean Ledford.

Talley said being able to share the successes of the district’s student-athletes, coaches, and teams for the first time with the new Superintendent and Chief of Staff made this year’s event especially memorable.

“I am grateful for the passion of our athletes, the dedication of our coaches, and the support of our families and communities,” she said. “They have shown what true resilience looks like, and their hard work has paved the way for another successful year.”
