July 21, 2026 - As students prepare to head back to school on Aug. 10, student safety is more important than ever. Through Duval's Be Safe. Be Seen. campaign, schools are embracing a new, hands-on approach to teaching students safe road habits: traffic gardens. This miniature network of streets and signs gives students the opportunity to practice pedestrian and bicycle safety skills that will last them a lifetime.

With more children walking, biking and traveling through school zones each day, Duval's traffic gardens are helping students build the confidence and skills they need to stay safe on and around our roadways.

Students at San Mateo Elementary School were thrilled to mount up and take a ride through a newly-opened traffic garden earlier this summer. Team Duval News was on the scene to capture the moment, take a look at the video below:
