June 18, 2026 - History came to life at the 2026 Required Instruction Summer Writing Institute, hosted last week at Stanton College Preparatory School. Four social studies teachers and 20 high school students in grades 10-12 came together for a collaborative learning experience centered on civic understanding, historical reflection, and financial literacy.
This engaging four-day program combined history instruction, writing workshops, and in-person learning as students traveled to historical sites including The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services, the Lincolnville Museum & Cultural Center, as well as the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta Jacksonville Branch. The powerful words of guest speakers Ms. Hazel Gillis, President of the Association for the study of African American Life and History (ASALH) James Weldon Johnson Branch, and Civil Rights activist and author Mr. Rodney Hurst enriched the educational experience for students.
Students attending the program created a culminating product to present on the final day of the institute. Dance, original music, poetry, artwork, and presentations were among the media chosen by students to give life to the indelible lessons bestowed during the program. A recognition ceremony followed, celebrating the hard work of students and the contributions made by the guest speakers to connect today's generation to the lessons of the past.
Team Duval News was on site to capture these important moments and celebrate the combined effort of all participants and sponsors. Take a look at the photo collage above to see the teachers and learners in action.
