English Language Arts & Reading

Students at Atlantic Coast High School have numerous options for fulfilling their English Language Arts requirement for graduation, each designed to support students in meeting and surpassing the learning benchmarks of our current Florida B.E.S.T. standards. Across these ELA and Reading course offerings, ACHS faculty bring a practical, student-centered approach to the classroom, ensuring our students have the best opportunity to discover their potential and succeed as learners.

In the Standard ELA classroom, students will be challenged to improve their critical thinking skills and practical writing skills through encounters with a variety of fiction, essays, poetry, and plays.

Our Honors ELA courses push students to find their growing edges through cooperative learning engagement with challenging literary classics and more in-depth writing experiences.

Advance Placement (AP) English and Dual Enrollment English courses invite highly motivated juniors and seniors to begin working at a college level while still in the high school classroom.

And students who need extra support in reaching state ELA standards will find the help they need in our Reading courses, offered at each grade level, and providing a practical approach to improving reading skills.

For those students with a special aptitude or interest in the literary arts, we also offer Journalism, Debate, Film, and Great Books courses as electives.

Our ACHS English/Reading faculty work collaboratively for the good of our students—planning together, consulting together, designing together—ensuring a high-quality experience from classroom to classroom. In addition to being English education specialists, our ELA/Reading faculty bring a breadth of formal study and professional experience to the classroom that enriches the learning experience of our students. Journalism, history, theater, philosophy, anthropology, business, law, and religion are among the many areas of expertise represented in our faculty, ensuring that learning in the classroom has academic depth and practical application.
