Atlantic Coast High School’s Health and Physical Education Program aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and motivation for a lifelong active and healthy lifestyle. Physical Education courses include sport-specific options like Tennis, Volleyball, Softball, Basketball, Golf, and Weight Training, as well as Team Sports, Recreation, and Individual/Dual Sports, reinforcing key concepts. Program outcomes focus on motor skill development, fitness education and assessment, cognitive understanding of movement, social and cooperative skill-building, and promoting lifelong physical activity.

Health Opportunities through Physical Education (HOPE) is a graduation requirement in the state of Florida.  This year-long course provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to be healthy throughout their lifetime. The intent of a comprehensive health education program is to motivate students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease, and avoid or reduce health-related risk behaviors.

Comprehensive health education addresses 12 component areas under Florida State Statute 1003.42 (2)(o): Community health, Consumer health, Environmental health, Family life, Injury prevention and safety, Internet safety, Mental and emotional health, Nutrition, Personal health, Prevention and control of disease, Substance use and abuse, and Teen dating violence.

The educators in the HEPE department at Atlantic Coast bring diverse backgrounds and experiences, ranging from high school athletics to collegiate and professional sports. Several faculty members are alumni of Duval County Public Schools and have chosen to give back to their community by pursuing careers in education.

All students are expected to dress out for their PE/HOPE classes (days are specific for each class and students/parents should check with individual teachers). The required AC PE shirt may be purchased from https://stores.inksoft.com/achs_pe/shop/home. Students should have the AC PE shirt, athletic bottoms and athletic shoes.
