Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) have worked collaboratively to create Jean Ribault High School’s Aviation Program (Aeronautical Science). The goal of the program is to provide exposure to students interested in Aviation with an opportunity to earn up to 17 college credits, three industry certifications*, and scholarship opportunities through ERAU. All courses will be taught on the high school campus by an ERAU adjunct professor.

Course Descriptions

Aviation Maintenance General 1 – High School Course Code 8715110 (full year)

The Aviation Maintenance General 1 course prepares students for entry into the aviation industry. Students explore career opportunities and requirements of a professional aviation mechanic. Students study general hangar and shop safety, environmental concerns, mathematics, physics, basic aerodynamics, federal aviation regulations, publications and records. 

Aerospace Tech – High School Course Code 8600580 (full year)

This course provides students with an introduction to the knowledge, human relations, and technological skills found today in Aerospace Technologies. A minimum of 20% of classroom time will be dedicated to laboratory experiences.  Laboratory investigations that include scientific inquiry, research, measurement, problem solving, emerging technologies, tools and equipment, as well as, experimental quality, and safety procedures will be an integral part of this course. Students will interact with materials and primary sources of data or with secondary sources of data to observe and understand the natural world. Students will develop an understanding of measurement error, and develop the skills to aggregate, interpret, and present the data and resulting conclusions. Equipment and supplies will be provided to enhance these hands-on experiences for students.

AS 120/ASC 1000 Principles of Aeronautical Science – 3 Credits

An introductory course in Aeronautical Science designed to provide the student with a broad-based aviation orientation in flight-related areas appropriate to all non-Aeronautical Science degree programs. Subjects include historical developments in aviation and the airline industry; theory of flight; airport operations; aircraft systems and performance; elements of air navigation; basic meteorology theory; air traffic principles; flight physiology; and aviation regulations and safety.

AS 220/ASC 2560 Unmanned Aircraft Systems – 3 Credits*

This course is a survey of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), emphasizing the military and commercial history, growth, and application of UASs. The course will include basic acquisition, use, and operation of UASs with an emphasis on operations.

*Course includes the ability to obtain Industry Certification after taking and passing the SUAS Safety examination (CAPE Funding 0.2).                                                                                                                            

AS 121/ATF 1103 Private Pilot Operations – 5 Credits* (full year)

This course develops the aeronautical knowledge required for certification as a Private Pilot with an Airplane Single Engine Land rating. Topics include: regulations, safety, pre-solo operations, cross-country planning, airspace, chart use, communications, weather, performance, weight and balance, aerodynamics, and decision-making.

 *Course includes the ability to obtain Industry Certification after taking and passing the FAA Private Pilot Ground Written Examination (CAPE Funding 0.2).

AS 235/ASC 2562 Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Cross Country Data Entry – 3 Credits*

This course provides an understanding of the core technologies of unmanned aircraft systems. It will include examinations of the design concepts, powerplants, control systems, and communication technologies utilized in current unmanned aircraft systems and/or likely to be used in the next few years. Particular attention will be given to the technical capabilities, best applications, and operational best practices of cross-country flight planning for today's UASs.

*Course includes the ability to obtain Industry Certification after taking and passing the Visual Sight Operator’s examination (CAPE Funding 0.1).

AS 222/ASC 2564 Unmanned Aircraft Systems Security – 3 Credits

Unmanned Aircraft System Security is a sophomore level seminar course focused on the concepts of UAS security and protection. Through a combination of instructor lead discussion, assigned readings, and projects students will examine the concepts of security engineering, vulnerability, and malicious attack. Students will formulate opinions and strategies for protecting systems and assets from danger while understanding the implications of ignoring security concerns.

All students may take advantage of ERAU activities and resources including access to the library databases, free lectures, astronomy nights, athletic events, and summer camp scholarships opportunities. Additionally, ERAU agrees to waive the application fee for students participating in the program ($50 value) and the student(s) automatically receive a $2,000.00 per year scholarship (through the partnership) if they attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as an undergraduate student.
