Alejandro received an American flag that was flown over the Capitol Building. The ceremonial folding and presentation of the flag is our way of showing our appreciation to Alejandro Torres-Alvarez for his commitment to raising and retiring our colors daily. The retirement of our colors on this day is a symbol of JSMAL and National pride for our country’s flag. We are showing our appreciation by ensuring that Alejandro is reminded daily of how important he was to the JSMAL community.

Anisa W. displaying her certificate for the students completing her shoe tying club.

Anisa Williamson, an 8th grader enrolled in the Supported Level Academics (SLA) Program, noticed that some of her peers with disabilities struggled to learn how to tie their shoes. Demonstrating leadership and compassion, Anisa took the initiative to start the Shoe Tying Club.

Over six Fridays, Anisa dedicated her time to teach and support her classmates, showing incredible patience and dedication. To celebrate their progress, she organized a heartfelt graduation ceremony, complete with gifts and pizza, funded entirely out of her own pocket.

Her effort not only helped her peers develop a vital life skill but also fostered a spirit of kindness and community. Truly inspiring — great work, Anisa!
