Happy Holidays from the Wildcat Faculty and Staff!
It's hard to believe that we have come to the end of the second nine weeks! We have completed half of the school year! We wish each of you and your families a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing the students return on January 7, 2025.
Please remember how beneficial I-Ready is for students' academic growth. Here at school we "strive for 45." That means, we want 1st thru 5th grade students to spend at least 45 minutes working in I-Ready Reading as well as in I-Ready Math. Waterford for students in Kindergarten. If you have internet access, please encourage your child to work on the program at home to build skills in reading and math. These programs can be accessed via the blended learning platform at https://www.duvalschools.org/o/dcps/page/student-software
Happy Holidays!

School Consolidation of George Washington Carver and Rufus Payne Postponed
In September, it was recommended that George Washington Carver close at the end of 2024-2025 year due to budget shortfalls across the district. At the November budget School Board meeting, the School Board motion to amend the postponing of the consolidation to the 2026-2027 school year which means our school will remain open until 2026-2027 school year. We were excited to receive the good news.
We would like to thank every parent for your support and your continued support. Dr. Bernier, Duval County Public School Superintendent, has been hosting Town Hall meetings where you can voice your concerns as school closures are being recommended throughout the district. Please check out the upcoming meetings at the link provided https://www.duvalschools.org/article/1909724

Dear Wildcat families,
You are probably already aware that our school district has been considering potential school closures and consolidations in response to multiple financial challenges. I’m writing today to inform you that the current version of the proposed plan includes the closure of our school at the conclusion of this school year.
If ultimately approved by the School Board, our school community will merge with the Rufus Payne Elementary School for the 2025-26 school year.
At this stage, I just want to make you aware. There will be multiple opportunities to learn more about this proposal and to have your voice heard in the process before the School Board is asked to act on this proposal in November.
If you want to read more details about this situation, I encourage you to see this post on the district website.
We will soon be scheduling a school community meeting to answer any questions and hear your feedback. Additionally, representative members of our school community will participate in a process to evaluate the impact of this proposal and provide recommendations directly to the superintendent.
As soon as those opportunities are scheduled, I will update you. Until then, you know I am always open to personally discuss any aspect of your child’s education here at George Washington Carver Elementary
Sincerely,
Charlene T. James
Principal

Hello Team Duval families,
We heard your feedback!
You said you wanted a seamless, streamlined communication experience. Everything in one place. We are excited to present the NEW Duval Schools app!
About the Duval Schools App
Through this easy-to-navigate app, you can:
• Receive a feed of regular district and school-level updates.
• Access the Parent Portal to see your child’s academic information.
• Communicate with teachers through a new two-way communication tool called Rooms!
This means that you will no longer need multiple tools to keep up with your students’ teachers. District updates, classroom updates, and parent-teacher communication will all exist within one tool. You will continue to receive phone calls, text messages, emails, and/or voice calls from the district and your students’ principals to ensure that no matter what type of communication you prefer, your needs are met.
About Rooms
Rooms is a two-way parent-teacher communication tool that is available in the new app. It will bring all classroom conversations into one place and will take the place of any other communication tool previously used by Duval County Public Schools. It also enables teachers to share classroom announcements and updates in a way that’s much simpler for families. Here are just a few Rooms features we think you’re going to love:
• Two-way messaging with parents, guardians, students, and staff in a monitored, secure space
• Teachers can share classroom announcements, activities, and send reminders about coursework to families
• Teachers can upload and store classroom materials
• Teachers can record student behavior and academic progress
• Automatic translation in your preferred language
How Do I Get Started?
Follow these three easy steps:
1. Delete the old Duval Schools app on your phone if you had one.
2. Download the new Duval Schools app.
3. Visit www.duvalschools.org/app for easy-to-use tutorials on how to navigate Rooms and the new app.
We look forward to a great school year!
