Special Olympics Parade

Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center proudly celebrated the opening of its Special Olympics event on March 11, 2026, bringing together students, staff, families, and community partners for a day filled with excitement, pride, and school spirit.

Principal welcome remarks

The program began with welcoming remarks from Principal Moses Williams, who expressed appreciation to the many individuals and organizations that helped make the event possible. He recognized the dedication of teachers and staff, supportive parents and families, school leadership, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO), Florida Blue, and other community partners who continue to support opportunities for students. He also acknowledged the special appearance of two Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleaders, whose presence added to the excitement of the celebration.

The ceremony continued with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Cedric Webb and Ms. Dorianne Lyn. The audience then stood for a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem performed by Ms. Darlene Cameron.

One of the highlights of the event was a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office helicopter fly-over, which energized the crowd and created a memorable moment for everyone in attendance.

parade

Students and staff proudly participated in a festive Special Olympics parade, celebrating the athletes as they represented their classrooms. Each classroom carried its own Special Olympics banner, showcasing school pride and support for the athletes as they walked through the parade route.

The parade was made even more special with the participation of Oak Hill Academy, whose students, teachers, and principal joined the celebration in support of the athletes. The Mt. Herman community was also honored by the presence of former principal Ms. Wilson, who came to celebrate alongside students and staff.

The celebration continued with exciting performances from community partners, including the Andrew Jackson High School Marching Band and the Stanton High School Cheerleaders.

The event also featured a spirited performance by the Mighty Mingo Cheerleaders, Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center's own cheerleading team. Coached by Stephanie Granno, Giselle Hellemn, and Ms. Peterson, the team energized the crowd with an enthusiastic routine that highlighted the talents and school pride of Mt. Herman Students.

Adding to the joyful atmosphere, therapy dogs were also present during the event, bringing smiles and comfort to students, staff, and visitors throughout the celebration.

Special Olympics events provide students with opportunities to build confidence, develop physical skills, and experience the joy of teamwork and sportsmanship. The successful kickoff of this year's event reflects Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center's commitment to inclusion, empowerment, and celebrating the abilities of every student.
