Highlands Middle School is the Pride of the Northside. We are a Title I school operating on the north side of Jacksonville in Duval County. Title I is the largest federal aid to education program, and it has been in existence since 1965. It continues to level the academic playing field for children regardless of socioeconomic status. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards. We serve a total of 689 students in grades 6-8, comprised of 100% economically disadvantaged, 92% minority, 7% English language learners, and 18% are students with disabilities. Over the last decade, our school grade has ranged from an “F” to a “D” to its current grade of “C” for the last three school years. We have put in a lot of work to improve the school grade and are still working to achieve better for our students. Each year, we are that much closer to a “B.”
At Highlands Middle School, our mission is to afford a high-quality education in a supportive, respectful, and safe environment. In collaboration with families and community, we are committed to providing relevant learning opportunities for students to help them develop the knowledge, critical thinking, and social skills necessary for college and career readiness. In collaboration with families and the community, we are committed to providing students relevant learning opportunities to help them develop the knowledge, critical thinking, and social skills necessary for their future. The overall goal is to continue providing a culture of service where students feel free to learn and staff members feel free to educate students in a collaborative environment.
Parents love our school because it is up-and-coming academically, it is a neighborhood school, and many of our staff members live in this community. Our school also gives back to the community in various ways.
Students love participating in our sports teams as well as artistic curricular and extracurricular opportunities, including cheer and band. Students also enjoy our new PBIS program, Bizi, which rewards them for their attendance, grades, and behavior biweekly.
Our after-school program, Communities In Schools, is a quality, FREE school-based program that provides academic and enrichment activities for students five days per week.
Our band program, under the direction of Mr. Evans, offers many performance opportunities for students. Highlands Middle School's instrumental music department provides a comprehensive band program that includes a marching band, concert bands, a jazz band, and a pep band.
Our athletics program aims to cultivate, promote, and encourage participation in interscholastic sports among our students.
Achievers For Life is a program that provides family support, mentors, and academic assistance for students at school, as well as enhances parent engagement in their student’s education.
