The DCPS Hospital/Homebound (H/H) program is an eligibility-based program providing continuity of core instruction to assist students (K-12) who are temporarily unable to attend their school due to medical or psychiatric conditions. Students found eligible for the H/H program are provided with exceptional student education (ESE) services and access to specially designed support based on individual student needs. Our H/H services aim to deliver a flexible, supportive, and effective educational experience that accommodates the unique needs of students dealing with significant health issues, ensuring they continue to progress academically despite their medical challenges.
Hospital/Homebound helps students continue their education and meet their special educational needs while they are homebound or hospitalized. H/H programs are not intended to replace the classroom experience, but rather to help students minimize instructional gaps and promote their reentry into a traditional school setting. We strive to ensure our students are provided educational continuity and remain on track with their grade-level curriculum and educational objectives provided by DCPS. Academic achievement is of utmost importance. Our team develops an individualized plan tailored to meet the specific instructional, medical, learning, and pacing needs of every student, allowing for customization of academic materials and activities based on the learner’s abilities and medical condition. When a student is able to return to their district-assigned school, our staff develops a transition plan in collaboration with the student, family, and school staff to address academic and social reintegration and ensure continuity of support.
H/H families love our flexible learning environment. We can accommodate each student’s unique medical needs and scheduling constraints. Lessons and assignments are offered in various formats, such as online, in-person, or a combination, and timelines are adjusted to fit the student’s health needs. Our secondary students participate in an asynchronous online curriculum that permits them to create a school schedule that works best for those who are undergoing medication management and frequent doctor appointments. Lessons can be delivered at times that suit the child’s health and recovery needs. At Hospital/Homebound, we prioritize the collaborative process between our staff and our families. For all parties involved, this team approach is crucial in working to provide the vital support and resources needed for their child to succeed academically while managing their health condition.
Comfort and familiarity in the often chaotic world of chronic and/or acute illnesses are vital in the healing process. Learning from home or a hospital setting can provide that environment, reducing stress and distractions often associated with traditional school settings. By allowing students to learn from home or a hospital setting, they can avoid the burdens of commuting or navigating a traditional school environment, which can be particularly beneficial for those with severe health issues. With Hospital/Homebound, attending school can become a stable, welcome distraction from the unpredictable nature of health disturbances. Most of all, our students love the compassionate, dedicated teachers who come alongside them to offer academic instruction as well as emotional support. Battling a chronic/acute illness can be lonely, and an encouraging student-teacher relationship can offer a much-needed social connection for students who feel isolated.
