MAJ History
Mamie Agnes Jones was erected in 1964, under Superintendent Ish Brant. Mrs. Mamie Agnes Jones, whom the school is named after, established her love of teaching at the age of 16. At 34, teaching as a career became a necessity. As a widow, Mrs. Mamie Agnes Jones had the sole responsibility of raising her 5 children. During the summer, Mrs. Jones attended Florida State University and took a correspondence course from the University of Florida in order to become a certified school teacher. Mrs. Mamie Jones hobbies included: reading, playing with her pets, painting, knitting, and spreading happiness with random acts of kindness to her neighbors and friends. In 1948 when Mrs. Jones retired, she was a 70-year-teaching veteran. However, in retirement, she continued to educate by turning the living room of her home into a Kindergarten classroom from 9am to noon, five days a week. Our school was proudly dedicated to this “fabulous person” and “master teacher”. Mamie Agnes Jones’ dream of educating the town’s young and molding their minds lives on in the town folk. We “the town of Baldwin” thank her for her endless love of teaching.
Mamie Agnes Jones Elementary opened under the leadership of Dale Young. When Mr. Young retired in 1971, James Hurst assumed the principalship for 25 years until his retirement in 1996. Skip Hatcher, was the principal from 1996 to 2010. Skip Hatcher led Mamie Agnes Jones Elementary to “A” school status for 7 consecutive years. The town of Baldwin has a rich heritage of teachers who both lived and served in the community, including the next principal, Angela L. Jordan (formerly Long), who led the school from 2010 -2018. Marianne Lee served as the principal from 2018 - 2022. Our current principal, Katherine Kirkland, joined the school community in 2022. Currently, Mamie Agnes Jones Elementary has 37 faculty/staff members who support a student body of approximately 455 students. Mamie Agnes Jones Elementary is accredited by the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.
A full service cafeteria feeds our student body every day. Parents are encouraged to become actively involved through PTO, School Advisory Council, and by volunteering. Students may participate in activities including the WMAJ TV news studio (4th grade), Safety Patrol (5th grade), Robotics Club (2nd grade), and Running Club (3rd - 5th grade).
The faculty and administration are highly qualified and well educated with several ESOL endorsed teachers. Resource specialists include Music, Art, Physical Education, Guidance Services, and Media/Library. Paraprofessionals assist teachers. The student teacher ratio is 18:1 in K-3 and 22:1 in grades four and five. Students score above average on standardized tests. Our Florida school grade has fluctuated between a B to a C over the last four years. Our goal is that all students will make learning gains over their previous year’s accomplishments.
