The Marine Science Education Center offers a special drop-out prevention program that helps high school students earn a Performance-Based Diploma. Students complete three important steps: passing the state 10th grade reading test, the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam, and the GED test. With small class sizes and personal support, students get what they need to succeed. What makes our school unique is the mix of classroom learning and hands-on marine activities.
Every 5th grade student in Duval County Public Schools has the chance to dive into the wonders of marine science through fun, hands-on learning. In our labs, students observe marine animals under microscopes, handle live sea creatures in the wet lab, and explore fossils in the on-site museum. The adventure continues with a beach field trip, guided by our experienced instructor. During these visits, students walk the shoreline, collect shells, and learn about Florida's coastal environment.
Students at the Marine Science Education Center get to explore Florida's coast, up close. Visiting 5th graders study marine life under microscopes and discover shells along the beach. High school students dive deeper through personalized instruction as they work toward earning their GED. Hands-on experiences spark curiosity, build practical skills, and connect students to the world around them.
We help high school students, ages 17 to 18, who are behind in school, at risk of not graduating, and need extra support. Through the Performance-Based GED Exit Option Program, students learn in small classes and take part in hands-on activities. Our unique blend of academic support and real-world experience helps students stay focused, build confidence, and earn a high school diploma.
