“Today's black history fact takes us downtown to the LaVilla neighborhood. The ritz theater is a prominent center of artistic and cultural expression in the Jacksonville area. First opening in September 1929, it was notably nicknamed the Harlem of the south due to its inspiring presence in the theatrical and musical scene. Hosting artists like Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, and Billie Holiday the theaters patronage boomed between the 20s and 60s but it still remains as a monument to creativity of Jacksonville's black community.”
