For today's black history fact, we dive into the life of the Harlem renaissance figure Augusta savage and how she made her mark on U.S. history. Born in Jacksonville on February 29th, 1892, she nurtured her love for the arts in high school and later moved to New York in 1921 to pursue it further. Upon being admitted to the cooper union, a scholarship-based school, she began her career in which she would gain recognition as a sculptor, teacher, and civil rights activist. She worked with the NAACP to depict African Americans in a more humane and neutral light, opposing harmful stereotypes that polluted the media. After speaking out against discrimination in French universities, winning the Otto Khan Award, and studying at a leading arts school in Paris she returned to the U.S. in 1931 to open an art studio and teach and fight to keep the arts alive during the great depression. "I have created nothing really beautiful, really lasting, but if I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent I know they possess, then my monument will be in their work."- Augusta savage
