Today's black history fact explores the life and success of Jacob Lawrence who worked as a painter. Drawing inspiration from west African and Meso-American art he was well known for his modernist portrayals of African American history and historical figures documenting the African American experience in several series devoted to the great migration, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. Being born to migrant parents in 1917 he had a love for art that was nurtured by his involvement in Harlem community art center run by sculptor Augusta Savage. In 1999 the Jacob and Gwendolyn Lawrence Foundation for the creation, presentation and study of American art was opened allowing Lawrence's legacy and influence to persist in our modern day.
