Today's black history appreciation follows James Van Der Zee, born in Lenox, Massachusetts he made a prolific career for himself, and strengthened the cultural heart of Harlem as a successful Black photographer in the early 1900s. His photography career started when he was 14, when he purchased his very first camera. He eventually moved to Harlem, where he worked in a photography studio crafting and producing beautifully shot photos of Black residents. In the 1930s he expanded his services to photo restoration, passport photos, and funerary photography due to the economic strain at the time and he photographed many well-known Civil Rights pioneers like Muhammad Ali, Jean Micheal Basquiat, Ossie Davis, and Marcus Garvey. Throughout his career he has earned a number of awards, like the Pierre Toussaint Award and the Living Legacy Award from President Jimmy Carter. Though James Van Der Zee died in 1983 his legacy still lives on as a touchstone in the history of Harlem and a pioneer in the world of Black Photography.
