Today's black history appreciation follows the life of Zora Hurston, an African American writer, filmmaker, and anthropologist who honed her craft to bring attention to racial struggles in the south. Born in 1891 and grew up in Eatonville, Florida but in 1918 Hurston began her time at Howard University and was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, founded by and for black women. She wrote dozens of short stories, plays, and even an autobiography but one of her most prominent works were “How it Feels to be Colored Me” and “Their Eyes were Watching God”. After her passing much of her works were divided amongst her friends and colleagues and several of her papers can be found in the UF Smathers library.
