Today's Black History appreciation follows Carter G. Woodson who many would call the father of black history month. In February 1926 Woodson began celebrating “Negro History Week” which later became extended to a full month celebration in 1976 when it was recognized by President Ford. Though before Fords recognition black educators and students at Kent university proposed and celebrated a month-long celebration of Black excellence and history in 1969. Woodson dedicated his life to historical work and the preservation of Black artifacts and literature. In 1926 he pioneered the celebration with the goal of giving Black Americans a history to be proud of and to ensure that the overlooked role of Black people in American history was acknowledged by white historians. BSU and 5000 role models hope you enjoy the showcase later today and thank you for celebrating the 100th black history month with us!
