Correction-
The 4th grade math District assessment is Monday March 2nd not tomorrow! Reading is Tuesday 2/24.
Dear Mustang Families,
This week our fourth-grade Mustangs will take their district Diagnostic Monitoring (DM) assessments in Math TOMORROW (Monday 3/2) and Reading (Tuesday 2/24).
These assessments are important. They provide powerful information that helps us design intentional, targeted support plans as we head into Florida state testing in April and May.
When reviewing our most recent data from December, we noticed that some students who began the year reading on grade level showed a drop in performance mid-year. This tells us two important things: we must continue strengthening daily reading habits, and we must ensure students are consistently applying the strategies they have learned. We need your partnership in supporting strong habits at home — monitoring blended learning progress, practicing math facts regularly, and encouraging nightly reading. The more students read, the more their vocabulary, comprehension, and content knowledge grow — which directly impacts achievement across all subjects.
This Diagnostic Monitoring assessment is the final full diagnostic we will receive before state testing. We need students to truly show what they know so our support can be precise, strategic, and personalized.
At Chaffee Trail, we do not shy away from challenges — we Level Up.
We are reminding students to approach these assessments with focus, determination, and Mustang confidence. When the work feels tough, that is their signal to lean into the strategies they have practiced all year:
• Use scratch paper for reading and math
• Annotate passages and questions
• Read passages more than once and make sure they understand what is truly being asked
• Go back into the text to find evidence instead of guessing
• Show all work in math — simple computation mistakes can happen when we try to do everything in our heads
Effort matters. Perseverance matters. Finishing strong matters.
Sometimes students rush or lose confidence when work becomes challenging. When they know it matters to you, it matters to them. Your encouragement at home carries incredible power.
You can help by ensuring they:
• Get a good night’s sleep
• Eat a healthy breakfast
• Receive a strong pep talk the night before and the morning of testing
• Are reminded that their effort today builds their future tomorrow
We will use these results to continue targeted small-group instruction and ensure every Mustang is supported, challenged, and growing.
And don’t forget — students who make the required gains from last year’s FAST May score will earn the opportunity to attend our Level Up Celebration. We hope this incentive provides an extra boost of resilience and motivation as they tackle these assessments.
Thank you for partnering with us as we continue Buzzing with Purpose and Blooming with Pride all the way through testing season.
Once a Mustang, always a Mustang.
With pride,
Principal Doyle

Dear Mustang Families,
This week our fifth-grade Mustangs will take their district Diagnostic Monitoring (DM) assessments in Reading (Monday 2/23), Math (Wednesday 2/25), and Science (Thursday 3/5).
These assessments are important. They give us powerful information so we can design intentional, targeted support plans as we head into Florida state testing in April and May.
Fifth grade is a pivotal year. Spring FAST scores help determine middle school course placement. Results may open doors to advanced and enrichment pathways, or identify areas where additional support is needed. Those middle school placements influence high school coursework, which can ultimately impact college and career opportunities.
This DM is the final full diagnostic we will receive before state testing. We need students to truly show what they know so our support can be precise, strategic, and personalized.

We are reminding students to approach these assessments with focus, determination, and Mustang confidence. When the work feels tough, that is their signal to lean into the strategies they’ve practiced all year:
• Use scratch paper for reading and math
• Annotate passages and questions
• Read passages more than once - make sure they know what is actually being asked
• Go back into the text to find evidence instead of guessing
• Show all work in math (simple mistakes when doing math in our head can be the difference in success)

Sometimes students rush. Sometimes they get discouraged. But when they know it matters to you, it matters to them. Your words at home carry incredible power.

• Eat a healthy breakfast
• Hear a strong pep talk the night before and the morning of testing
• Are reminded that their effort today builds their future tomorrow

Next week our third graders will take their district Diagnostic Monitoring (DM) assessments in Reading (Tuesday) and Math (Thursday). This practice assessment is important because it gives us valuable information to design a strong plan of support for the remaining weeks of school as we prepare for the Florida state assessment in April.
As you know, third grade students must demonstrate proficiency in reading to be promoted to fourth grade. This DM will be the last full diagnostic we receive before state testing in April. We want students to truly show what they know so that our supports can be prescriptive and targeted based on their individual needs.
We are encouraging students to approach this assessment with focus, determination, and confidence. When the work feels challenging, they know to take a quick brain break and then get right back to applying the strategies we’ve practiced all year:
Use scratch paper for both reading and math
Annotate passages and questions
Read passages more than once
Go back into the text to find evidence instead of guessing
Show their work in math
We know that sometimes students rush or give up when things get difficult. Your encouragement makes a powerful difference. When students know this matters to you, it matters to them.
You can help by ensuring they:
Get a good night’s sleep
Eat a healthy breakfast
Receive a positive pep talk the night before and the morning of testing
We will use the results from this assessment to continue targeted small group instruction and provide the support each child needs to grow.
Also, please remind students about the Level Up celebration they can attend if they make the needed gains or reach proficiency. We hope the excitement of this incentive gives them an extra boost of resilience as they tackle these assessments.
Thank you for partnering with us to help your child do their very best!

The district is currently experiencing a network outage and PikMyKid is down. Please be patient as we get students out as quick and safely as possible.
Thank you
6pm Penny Lu Porcupine! We hope you can join us in zoom!

Motivation and encouragement from home can make a powerful difference in student success. When students hear that their effort matters to the adults in their lives, they are more likely to stay focused, try their best, and use the strategies they have learned in class.
As we prepare for next week’s DM3 assessment, we are asking for your partnership in helping your child “Level Up.” A few simple reminders and positive conversations at home can help students feel confident, prepared, and ready to give their best effort.
Here are some ways you can support your child:
⭐ Talk positively about the assessment. Let your child know that you care about their effort and that this is an opportunity to show what they have learned. Your encouragement helps them understand that their work matters.
⭐ Prepare for success. A good night’s sleep, arriving at school on time, and coming in with a positive mindset and strong work ethic make a big difference.
⭐ Use classroom strategies.
In math, remind students to use scratch paper and show their work rather than trying to keep everything in their head. Small computation errors can make a big difference.
Encourage them to annotate questions and identify exactly what is being asked in math, reading, and science.
For reading, students should annotate the passage, reread when needed, and use evidence from the text to support their answers.
⭐ Take their time. Rushing rarely leads to success. It is okay to feel confident, but students should double-check their work, reread questions, and verify answers before submitting.
⭐ Be respectful testers. Remaining quiet and focused helps everyone perform their best.
Students who demonstrate growth from their May 2025 scores will be invited to our Level Up Celebration, recognizing their hard work and progress. Let's talk up the Level Up incentive to get them motivated. Let them know that the data from this assessment will also help us plan targeted small-group support and enrichment so every Mustang continues to grow.
Thank you for partnering with us to encourage effort, perseverance, and pride in learning. When students know that both school and home believe in them, amazing things happen!
With Mustang Pride,
Principal Doyle
