What a GREAT DAY at Dinsmore today! Mayor Donna Deegan and our very own Miss Florida, Paris Richardson, joined us to read to our second grade students. The students really enjoyed the two books and were super excited to choose their own book from the Mayor Deegan's River City Readers Book Mobile.

Dear Dinsmore Parents,

I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to address a matter that understandably caused concern last week, when a student brought an unloaded weapon to campus. While no students or staff were harmed, we recognize the seriousness of the incident and the concern it caused our families.

Thanks to the vigilance of our staff, and the training they have received to recognize and respond to potential threats, the situation was identified quickly and handled appropriately. We are grateful for their attentiveness and commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for all.

The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. As a school community, we are committed to ensuring that an incident like this does not happen again. We are taking proactive steps to reinforce safety procedures, strengthen communication, and continue building a culture where every child feels safe and protected.

Here are the measures currently in place and the upcoming steps we are taking:

“See Something, Say Something” – We will continue to stress the importance of students speaking up if they ever see or hear something concerning. Every student has received the Fortify Florida training that shows them how to report tips to trusted adults. Empowering our students to report helps us respond quickly and appropriately.

Student Support Lessons (August 25–26) – A DCPS Counseling Specialist will visit each grade level to provide safety-focused lessons. Our School Safety Assistant, Mr. Armstrong, will also be present during these lessons so that students become familiar with him as a trusted adult they can turn to when needed.

Increased Visibility of Safety Staff – Mr. Armstrong, along with school administrators, remains highly visible throughout the school day in hallways, common areas, and during arrival and dismissal times to provide both supervision and reassurance.

Bookbag Procedure – Beginning immediately (8/20), all student bookbags will remain in the hallways. This change will allow school administrators and School Police to conduct random safety sweeps more efficiently, adding another layer of security to our campus.

Community Partnership and Feedback – We invite all parents, guardians, and community members to attend our School Advisory Council (SAC) Meeting on Wednesday, September 4th at 3:30 p.m. During this meeting, the floor will be open to discuss additional safety measures and gather input from our families on ways we can continue to strengthen our campus safety.

We understand the trust you place in us each day when you send your child to school, and we take that responsibility very seriously. Together, with your partnership, we can maintain a safe, supportive environment where all students are free to learn and grow.

Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in keeping our school community safe.

Sincerely,
Principal Peterson
