Loretto Student Programs and Clubs 

National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) - Mrs. Roepe and Mrs. Gonzales

Students in the 5th grade who excel academically, and model exceptional responsibility can become members through a local selection process that concludes with induction into Loretto Elementary’s National Elementary Honor Society chapter. Membership provides an outstanding means to prepare and shape students for their middle level and high school experiences.

NEHS Eligibility Requirements

Students who meet the requirements for membership outlined by their school’s chapter are eligible to be invited for membership.

Each chapter is required to publish its qualifications for membership, which is based on the four pillars of NEHS:

  • Scholarship
    Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA.)

  • Responsibility

  • Service

  • Leadership

Student Council - Mrs. Gonzales

Loretto Elementary student Council is comprised of third, fourth, and fifth graders - two from each class.  The student representatives are either chosen by their teacher or through a classroom election (whichever the teacher decides.)  Our focus is Leadership and Service.  

Safety Patrols - Mrs. Linke and Mrs. Kircher

The duties of a Safety Patrol include serving at assigned morning and afternoon posts to assist in the safe and orderly arrival and dismissal of students, assisting adults throughout the school, and participating in flag ceremonies such as Color Guard. Safety Patrols are expected to be courteous, follow all school rules, and be on time to their post with the proper uniform. Safety Patrols must also maintain an "A - B" average academically and an "A" in conduct.

Students who are selected for safety patrol officers are in good company. Past school safety patrol officers include current members of the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

L-Star - Mrs. Fox

An L-Star is a student that demonstrates good conduct and potential for being a leader. L-Stars are helpful members of our school community that assist teachers and staff members in classrooms and other locations around the school. This is a position of trust and responsibility. Attendance and punctuality are important. Your child will be assigned to a faculty member whom they will assist BOTH in the morning and afternoon.

Loretto News Network - Mrs. Esser

The Loretto News Network is the morning news program for Loretto Elementary School.  The news teams consist of students from the 4th and 5th grades.  The anchors report weather, birthdays, daily lunch menu, conduct interviews and edit, and any other special announcements relevant to the school.  The Pledge of Allegiance is recited with a moment of silence. Students are encouraged to share special events, rewards that they have received, or other achievements on the morning news. Members of the Loretto News Network are 5th graders who have met academic achievement criteria and have successfully completed a live audition. 

Drama Club - Ms. McMillan

Loretto Drama Club is an extracurricular activity designed to engage students in the performing arts and theater. Students will learn acting skills, work on building sets and making props, design costumes and makeup and so much more. Students will participate in various skits and acting exercises, work on memorizing lines and delivering them with expression, and contribute to the production of a final performance.

Battle of the Books - Mrs. Anderson

Loretto’s Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program for student’s 3rd-12th. The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. Students participate by reading from a list of books provided for the year’s America’s Battle of the Books. Students may count “books” they have read before. However, they cannot count books that they have only seen a video or a movie. They will keep a summary so they can review this information before their “Local Battle”.

Kickball Club - 

Loretto Kickball Club is a great way for children to build social skills, develop teamwork and an active lifestyle. The students learn sports fundamentals like kicking, throwing, and catching are learned while having fun.

Garden Club - Ms. Whitaker

Loretto’s Garden Club provides a great way for students to learn about gardening and gain hands-on experiences growth their own food and tasting the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor.

Girls on the Run - Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Linke, Mrs. Courson, Mrs. Tomlinson, Mrs. Weiss, and Ms. Rivas

Girls on the Run, a national non-profit organization, designs programming that strengthens 3rd-8th grade girls’ social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences.

The Owls Orff Ensemble - Mr. Johns

The Owls Orff Ensemble is a group dedicated to practicing and performing music using the fundamentals of the Orff Approach. This musical group will be using a combination of singing, movement, drumming, and Orff instrumentation (glockenspiels, xylophones, metallophones) to perform a variety of different songs and student-created compositions. The approach in and of itself is crafted to assist children in the creation of music.

This ensemble is for 4th and 5th graders. We are accepting 30 students to be members. The Loretto Owls Orff Ensemble will be holding auditions on Thursday after school 10/06 from 3:30-5:00. If you are selected to be a member of The Owls, rehearsals will be on Thursdays after school from 3:30-4:30 with Mr. Johns.

The audition is as follows:

  1. Sing a short excerpt of a song of your choice. You will not need to sing an entire song. 30 seconds will be sufficient. If you are not sure which song to pick, pick something simple that you know (Happy Birthday). Remember, I am listening for voice quality, not lyrics memorization.

  2. Match pitch

  3. Reading basic rhythmic notation (whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth notes)

The Owls Orff Ensemble will perform at school functions plus a spring concert. More information to come!

Robotics Club - Mrs. Anderson
In Explore league, teams of students focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education robot. There are no competitions at this level of robotics.

Minecraft Student Ambassador Club - Mrs. Niebauer, Mrs. Tzamaris, Mrs. Kim, Mrs. Tomlinson, Mrs. Cuppy, Mrs. Riley, Mrs. Vogt, Ms. Murray, Ms. Ribeiro

A Minecraft Student Ambassador is a student who is a Minecraft Expert , has a passion for Minecraft, and who is willing to support, assist, or mentor other students and teachers at their school or in the school district with using Minecraft Education Edition. MSAs will provide assistance in the form of demos, training, leading small group sessions and/or one on one sessions. MSAs are on-campus student leaders with a passion for sharing technology with their classmates and teachers. Apply to become a Minecraft Student Ambassador today -  gain leadership experience, get access to resources and develop your technical and 21st Century skills. This opportunity is available to students in grades K-5.

MSA club meets once per month after school and virtually through Teams. 

Chess Club - Ms. Bacon 

The Knight School is your school's official chess team. The Knight School's approach has had amazing success because our unique and unprecedented educational philosophy,“the chess party,”is the perfect way to transform a complete beginner into a devastating chess machine.

Class includes T-shirt, chess set, free on-line tourneys, pieces for life and the semester ending tournaparties.

Loretto Elementary Special Olympics Unity Club - Coach Schoonmaker

A club designed to foster more unity/understanding within our student body. As Special Olympics puts it ”simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.” We started this past October with several Unified PE classes and we are expanding our efforts with this after-school club. The club will be sports-based and will start with the Special Olympics Little Elites Athletic Program which mainly includes Track & Field activities (i.e. sprinting, relay races, long jumps). Meets every Monday. 

Girls Who Code - Mrs. Niebauer, Mrs. Vogt, Mrs. Kircher, Mrs. Tomlinson, Mrs. Hastings, Mrs. Lavello

A Girls Who Code Club is a free after-school program for girls in grades 3-12 who want to learn computer science and join a supportive community of peers and role models. Girls can explore coding in a fun and friendly environment, work on projects that solve real-world problems, and read books about inspiring women in tech. At Loretto Elementary, we will also be sponsoring our own K-2 GWC club as well.
