Where Possibilities Are Endless
Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School helps students find their career paths by the time they head for high school. This historic school was first opened in 1928 as a high school for Black students before it transitioned to a middle school following integration. Its alumni include an Olympic gold medalist and a federal judge, proving the possibilities are endless for your child.
Matthew Gilbert is a historic Jacksonville middle school with over 90 years of cultivating great leaders. Students build such incredible bonds with the school that alumni groups continue to stay active and hold events long after leaving. Although the beautiful building dates back several decades, additions and technology updates have kept the school on the cutting edge of learning.
Early College Program
We get our students prepared for college while they are with us. Our Early College Program allows participating students to earn free college credit while in high school through our partnership with Florida State College at Jacksonville. To participate, students must score a level 3 or higher on the FSA Reading and a score of 85 or higher on the PERT exam.
Our Magnet program affords students daily access to explore technology in their daily life and as a career path. One of the most important contributions technology makes in our classrooms is how it affects our students’ attitudes toward learning. When technology is a routine part of their school experience, student attendance and grades improve. Magnet students have program continuity to Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology and Asa P. Randolph Career Academies, where they can learn trades that become careers or help them pay for college.
Private School Atmosphere in a Public School
Students benefit from exciting electives, extracurricular activities, and sports that rival those of private schools. Mentoring and after-school programs support student development and provide a positive influence while parents are at work.
Matthew Gilbert’s schoolwide uniform policy gives our students a sense of belonging. Our students get a greater sense of school spirit, a reduction in bullying, and improved study habits.

Pre-Early College
Acceleration track that affords academically advanced students the opportunity to earn up to four high school credits and three college credits
