Where Possibilities Are Endless
Matthew W. Gilbert Middle School helps students find their career paths by the time they head for high school. This historic school was first opened in 1928 as a high school for Black students before it transitioned to a middle school following integration. Its alumni include an Olympic gold medalist and a federal judge, proving the possibilities are endless for your child.
More Than 90 Years in Education
Matthew Gilbert is a historic Jacksonville middle school with over 90 years of cultivating great leaders. Students build such incredible bonds with the school that alumni groups continue to stay active and hold events long after leaving. Although the beautiful building dates back several decades, additions and technology updates have kept the school on the cutting edge of learning.
Accelerated Learning Path
We get our students prepared for rigorous high school courses while they are with us. Our program allows participating students to earn high school credits. To participate, students must score a level 3 or higher on the FSA Reading and Math to take advantage of these courses.
Private School Atmosphere in a Public School
Students benefit from exciting electives, extracurricular activities, and sports that rival those of private schools. Mentoring and after-school programs support student development and provide a positive influence while parents are at work. Matthew Gilbert’s schoolwide uniform policy gives our students a sense of belonging. Our students get a greater sense of school spirit, a reduction in bullying, and improved study habits.

Students can complete their homework under certified teacher supervision and have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities like sports, symphony and robotics

Dropout prevention initiative developed and funded by the United Way of Northeast Florida, in partnership with Communities In Schools of Jacksonville, Jewish Family and Community Services, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida
Accelerated Learning Path
Acceleration track that affords academically advanced students the opportunity to earn up to four high school credits that prepare students for academic success.
5000 Role Models of Excellence
The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project aims to intervene in the lives of young male youth in an effort to provide them with positive role models and experiences that will empower them to make good choices, encourage healthy living, be responsible, be respectful, and achieve their goals.
Children's Home Society
Children’s Home Society of Florida is the oldest and largest statewide organization devoted to helping children and families. Students, teachers, parents and community members identify their primary needs and challenges, the results of which will determine the services and solutions that will be brought into the school.
