JBE EDUCATORS MAKE A LASTING IMPACT – Today’s Team Duval Shoutout celebrates the incredible team at Jacksonville Beach Elementary who go above and beyond for students every day. Ms. Johnson is known for her high standards and compassionate approach, helping students feel safe, supported, and valued—whether in the classroom or checking in on everyone during a recent field trip. Mrs. Heather DeSpain brings creativity and heart to the school community as an art teacher who leads beloved events like the Cultural Night of the Arts, supports school productions, and creates inspiring experiences that make students feel seen and celebrated. Adding to the joy, the school’s PE coach made this year’s fundraiser unforgettable by jumping into the dunk tank over 300 times—all while encouraging students and creating lasting memories in his very first year. Together, these educators create a positive, vibrant environment where students thrive.

CELEBRATING SCHOOL COUNSELORS — Team Duval is proud to recognize National School Counseling Week and the incredible impact our more than 240 school counselors make every single day. They advocate for students, help them navigate their academic journeys, and guide them toward their goals. Our success as an A-rated district with a 97.6% graduation rate would not be possible without these dedicated professionals. As part of this special week, dozens of counselors gathered at the Schultz Center for their annual conference, focused on building student “superpowers” like grit and resilience – perfectly aligned with the national theme of helping students thrive and preparing them for college, career, and life. Their commitment to growing their own “superpowers” directly fuels student success across Team Duval. Join us in thanking our outstanding school counselors for the lasting difference they make in our schools and community!

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND – Today we celebrate Shannon Erickson, a third-grade teacher at Jacksonville Beach Elementary School for excelling in her professional development. Erickson recently completed an ESOL endorsement course designed to help educators more effectively teach and support students learning to speak English. Erickson’s course facilitator was so impressed with her hard work, she nominated her to receive special recognition in front of her class. Congratulations on a job well done!

District schools were closed for two days due to Hurricane Helene and were closed three days due to Hurricane Milton. As a result, students and families should plan to make up these days on the following dates: Friday, Nov. 1; Friday, Feb. 14; and Friday, May 30. All three of these dates were weather days but have been converted to regular school days. We only need to make up three days because there was enough instructional time built into the calendar to cover the other lost days.
